Cam pulley weight?

Postby 86 Power » Mon Oct 18, 2004 3:24 pm

I have two sets of cam pulleys. Bluetop / Redtop.

Bluetop have 6 circle cutouts
Redtop have a 5 star pattern

My question: Are the redtop pulleys lighter than the bluetop pulleys since they have this 5 spoke rather than 6 spoke design? And I assume they are interchangeable??

why dont you weigh them on some kitchen scales or sum...?

(or drop them from the roof and see which hits the ground first  )

haha, or hang one off each of my ladys ears and see how long they stretch?

I can't be bothered taking my bluetop ones off my engine. Just thought someone might know of hand. My guess is that the 5 spoke design will be lighter, but since its still steel not much lighter.

yes it is lighter, i have weighed them before but cant remeber the figure though.... only a few grammes i think. 10 maybe? itll only make a diff if your doing every little trick in the book looking for every 1/4 hp

You will NOT get a power gain of any sort by reducing the rotating mass of you cam gears by 10grams, if you reduce the flywheel weight do you get a power gain??(You get a gain in engine acceleration, but you are not increasing air/fuel burn or majorly changing frictional losses). Even if you did get a gain it wouldn't even be noticeable on a decent dyno like a Dynapack or even a Superflow engine dyno as 10Grams is sweet $&#$% all.

Either gear is strong enough for the job & use what you have, bare in mind that most adjustable cam gears weigh similar if not more than a factory gear, there gains come not through reduced weight but through having the ability to maximise the cam timing.

Ok cheers for straightening that out. I just thought, hey if there were two pairs sitting there on the bench, why not choose the lightest ones 8)
