20v real low idle

Postby strap-on » Sat Oct 23, 2004 5:32 pm

ok i need help here, havent doen a search cos the engine is useless.

my 20v silvertop idles real low, like so much that the steering wheel shakes, im not eactly sure how low as my tacho is broken, but the vaccum gauge sits at like 21 at idle, i

but yeah ive cheecked fro vaccum leaks but it its still real low, can anyone think of any ideas? mayb its caused by a high temp under the bonnet being sucked in by the air filter? or can anyone else think of any other ideas?

it's not very good for the engine to be idling that low. ie 600

on that note how would i check to see why my 20v is idling @ 1800 on start off???

you cannot diagnose a vaccuum leak with a vacuum gauge on an EFI car, its useless..

mine was doing that intermittantly at times - but fixed itself now

- think u it would pay to look at the idle stepper motor - even cleaning it can help - i have fixed a few problems just by cleaning them.. does it hunt at idle or just idle low? a dirty idle stepper motor will cause the car to hunt - maybe a worse one can stick in one place and stay there.. worth short anyways. I belive on the 20V's they are on the left hand lower side of the intake manifold.. should be 3 wires, light brown housing on the motor/solinoid part from memory

ok it idles round 750-800 rpm, which is about average, but it still vibrates real bad, like you can feel the car jumping and stuff, and the engine sounds like it goes any lower and it might stall, sometimes if i flick my vvt switch at idle it will stall, doesnt seem to do it at night tho which is what makes me think it might be the ambient air temp.

new plugs (most likely)

lots of things it could be aye

the weird thing is, it idles at the same revs that it always has, it just jumps and vibrates and shudders alot its real weird, and when u depress the throttle slowly there is a bit of a delay whenthe engine just about dies, then kicks in, so throttle response isnt instant
