Turbo 2-stroke nothing to do with toyotas sorry

Postby Fuct Munkey » Thu Oct 28, 2004 9:49 pm

i am wondering as to the implications of makin a turbo 2-stroke. the object in question is a (dirty lil) honda nifty fifty... just for fun. so out of curiousity does anyone have any ideas on y and y not this would/wouldnt work? and where could i find a turbo small enuff, for preferably dirt cheap... i know its stupid, but ideas are welcome.

Maybe a turbo off a early 80s charade or honda city would be the business?
There was someone at the speedtech drags day with a turbo quad bike.. maybe track them down? (nzmmc might be the place to ask)

Probably a better sized turbo would be one off one of the suzuki 660cc turbo engines (i.e. a bit smaller) Still needs a lot of puff from the 50cc honda two stroke though....

Wouldn't work. Smaller 2 strokes rely on scavenging to work, running pressure would negate all factory flow characteristics, meaning I don't see how it would run. There is a scooter along the same lines in Chch, they nos'd it. Anyway, you'd need a tiiiiiny little turbo, even a 660cc 'zuki turbs would need tens of thousands of RPM to even produce postive atmospheric pressure.

Just nos the $&#$%. Would cost less.

hahaha off a cliff!

but seriosly i dont know where youd get a turbo that small from.. i know they are out there but finding a real cheap one would be hard...

id seriously consider NOS. or goto a model store and buy some nitro like they use in model cars/planes or both!!!

Forced induction two strokes only work if they are not reed valve engines, ie piston ported, rotary valve or cams. Not sure what type the nifty fifty is, but even if it were possible the benefits of forced induction are reduced by the pumping losses involved, i.e. the increased crankcase compression needed to be overcome by the piston. Also you'd be constantly taking the turbo apart to clean the carbon build up off it so it would be a PITA to keep running.

Get a chamber and NOS if you want to make it go faster.

Speaking of strange engines....who knows what this engine is and who made it? 8O

um you did! with photoshop!

hmm 2 stoke injected 3 cyl... interesting head design
got me stuffed, is it a home built special or a mass produced item?

has it got valve for the exhaust? or ports?

nifty fifty =reed valve
you need a rg susuki rg400/500 (sqaure 4)
some of the older motor bikes have it but most moved to the reed valve as a way to smooth the power output

2 strokes love the nos
i know of nos'ed 500cc rg in chch

absolutly unrideable
and blows up often lol

anyways

that motor looks like it has a valved exhaust
mabee to tri to get away from the bulk of a expansion chanbers
i herd of such a engine 10 years back
never seen one though

yeah def looks like valve exhausts. other wise its and interesting way to run a crank angle sensor!

Err.. can you say ultra long valve stems?? How on earth would the cam (I assume there's a cam under that red cover) drive vavles with stems that long.. what's the point of the distance between the cam and the bottom of the head???
How can you tell it's 2-stroke just from that pic? I would have thought it 4-stroke because it has a sump and injectors, but I'm no expert.
That motor confuses me :?... reminds me of my daihatsus tho :D

um pushrods! i have heard of them being used in that layout.

also if you look where the inlet ports are in relation to the plugs, that says 2 stroke to me.

Nah, pushrod engines don't need a cam/cambelt do they? Surely pushrods are a series of levers opperated off the crank which open/close valves? Or have I been wrong all this time?

push rods operate off a cam that is normally located next to the crankshaft

the valves would have to that long at all

but anyways

Yeah, so what's this engine? The cam's clearly on top and belt driven. Is it both overhead cam and pushrod then? :?

that turbo quad is jono's, performance metalworks, and was specifically built to tow docile, cant remember what sort of turbo it uses, but it is tiny, the smallest ive ever seen, i know it came from steve murch, motorsport engineering.
ohh and that quad is fuel injected, running a link ecu

Yeah, the engine is a two stroke, with the intake being at the bottom,
and the exhaust outlet is just visible up the top under the red cover ( you can see the studs for the exhaust manifold just sticking out).
A two stroke works by taking in the air and gas at the bottom of the stroke and letting out the exhaust at the top of the stroke, its a pretty crap way of making torque to be honest with you, but thats how you can tell its a 2 stroke - because the intake is at the bottom.

This one also has a fancy oil and fuel mixing injection system (which explains the two injectors going into it).

looks like its got quite a long stoke.
The exhaust is valved which explains the cam belt running up to the cover at the top.
Doesn't look like its got pushrods at all, only the cam for the exhaust is driven at the top by the cam belt. The intake valves arent normally operated by cams on two stoke engines, normally have reed valves. The reed valve works by letting the gas air mix into the crankcase, but its a one way valve so the gas cant get back out where it came from.
Yes the valve stems may be long, but not as long as was originally thought, the top of the combustion chamber would be somewhere around the crease where the angled part goes into the vertical part in the head.
The silver piping at the top would be for water cooling i'd imagine.

sorry about the life story but its hard to explain things while keeping it short, as for who makes it or if its mass produced i dont know, but i do know that its bloody well made.
