its caused by a bacteria that lives inside the unit. you can get special air freshner from toyota or auto parts stores like repco

if you get it regased they will put a nice scent in with the gas, although if it is goin cold almost as soon as you turn it on, probably just easier to buy an air fresner

Ummm, you dont have the faintest clue how air con works, and you're just making shit up trying to sound smart, right? Your air con gas never makes it into the cabin. Otherwise using air con would eventually become a VERY expensive (and potentially hazardous) affair.

Does the smell only happen when on recirc or fresh air? AFAIK (which is not much about ventalation systems, but clearly more than rallymazda), these systems have filters, generally situated somewhere in the dash (often behind the glove box, I believe). Air con specialists should be able to supply a replacement filter. I have no idea of the costs.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

i think what he meant was when they regas it they do some general maintanece to the system, which would include cleaning and spraying in a disinfectant/airfreshner.

on the ball arnt we today fellas.

they could spray stuff into ur system (the venting...), when they do it, some may not.

why not just buy some of that smelly spray, spray half a bottle in your vents and clean up the mess you made, then run it through the system for a while... certainlly make it get rid of that smell :)

rallymazda, sorry if I am misreading this, but are you still saying that the gass from the aircon is sented and released into the passenger compartment?
Air con is a sealed system, gas does not enter the car through the fans.
The link you posted even shows this.
If, I am misunderstood, its late and I appologise.

As for the topic,
There are afew sprays on the market that you can spray into the air system that give it a fresh clean smell. Particularly good if the car is/has been owned by a smoker!
Cant believe im still a member here.

Correct. The gas never gets out of the pipes for you to smell it.

The smell is causes by the condensation on the evaporator in the heater box causes water to build up in there. They have a drain but sometimes block. That's why a car running with the air con on can leave a pubble of water.
Anyway the moisture causes mould and that causes the smell.

I thought that one of the work cars had a broken A/C pipe that was leaking gas into the cabin once.

Was driving back to work with the A/C on and then I notice that it looks a bit like fog coming out of the centre vents.

My reaction:

" 8O ...................... 8O ......................... 8O Shit, I better turn this shit off!"

However, I think it might have been working a little TOO efficiently!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
