Question for all you 4AGE owners....

How many of you have had the catalytic converters taken off your cars? Has it made much difference in its emmisions? Reason i ask is that a friend of mine has had his taken off, and theres the new emmissions law coming in. Is it still a safe practice?

there are new emission laws coming in?!

i've removed all mine and i've had no trouble with the law.

im sure you have nothing to worry about......the turbo guys out there running hella rich with no cats may have to worry tho if it does come into place ;)

I just heard that emmission testing will be soon phased into a WOF inspection. I know it'll take some time, but last thing thats needed is people losing their cars because of a stupid little rule like that :?

people still get more hp that you could dream of with a cat in place

The last WOF I got they gave an emission test for free.

The maximum carbon monoxide is 1.5%
The maximum hydrocarbons (unburnt fuel) is 400 parts per million.

They also measure CO2 and O2 levels for the efficiency of the engine.

My car (ST162 3SGE) got:

CO - 0.01%
CO2 - 15.5%
HC - 132
O2 - 0.09

As you can see it is well within the limit but the unburnt fuel is a little high which i've narrowed down to worn injectors (lower atomisation) hence im getting my injectors reconditioned :D.

It also says on this sheet that quote "Emission testing is not yet mandatory in New Zealand"

I was speaking to the wof people last week about emissions and they said that the levels have not yet been decided, but as with many nz laws it will probably be pretty leniant. The guy said even old school 70's cars will probably be ok IF tuned properly.

How will the fully worked rally cars etc get warrants?
I cant imagine anything running 300+ degree cams and avgas or a dirty big turbo passing the emission tests.
Cos some competition cars need to have a warrant dont they?
Or will an authority card or motorsport licence get you around this?

Yea, but how would the possibly pass noise laws etc. Different rules apply to them - they have to be certed for starters.

Yes these laws are coming in, and they're not very far away, either. Emissions laws will not be historical, so older cars wont be affected.

Personally, I think it's an EXCELLENT idea. We're one of the only countries that doesnt have emmission laws. Clean green NZ my ass. If you guys had any idea how effective cats are, you'd realise EVERY car should have one. They make such an enormous difference to pollution.

A cars catalytic converter doesnt work effectively until it's up to operating temperature. If started from cold, the average car will produce 95% of it's emmissions in the first minute of a 10 minute journey. Once at operating temperature, a car will only produce a tiny fraction of the emmissions of when it's cold.

Well when they bring the laws in all garages will have to test to the same standards so what would it matter where you take your 'fully work rally car' to get a WOF?? :roll:

Didn't the LTSA webiste say about this being phased in as of 01/01/04? Maybe it was just a proposal. In either case it excluded pre 01/01/90 cars

I said RALLY car, not FALLY car. And YES some competition cars DO have to be warranted to participate in certain events!

So shut that mobile sperm bank you call a mouth and think b4 u comment!

A fully prepared rally car, Registered and with a current WOF, etc
