Bedding in rings after 20v rebuild. Anyone had problems?

Postby 85AW20v » Thu Nov 04, 2004 11:36 am

The 20v in the racecar is in need of a rebuild. Anyone had any problems with the rings not bedding after replacing them and giving the bores a hone? Any tips to ensure that they do bed in properly gratefully received.
See ya

sould only take 50 km's for the rings to seat at the most
normally a cain around the block and its all sweet

just run a good mineral 15-50
change it after a good drive
new filter ,oil
and thats it

people think you have to baby a new engin
witch to a point is true
im normally nice for the first 50km's
then its just a nother engine

ive never had a engine fail yet

Newer japanese parts are designed well, and as vvega says, bed in after far fewer k's than most believe. It's critically important to change the oil/filter after your bed in period. I'd probably do the oil/filter after 100km.

Try not to idle for too long during your bed in process.

and the key to success with any engine freshen up is CLEANNESS

Mine didn't use any oil at all after my rebuild "untill it mashed a hole in the top of the piston when the valve retainer broke :D )

Rings

If using A crome top ring use minimal oil when pistons are being inserted to bore, also done give the bore a corse hone.
To finish first, first you must finish

yea same for bearings, bearing are dependant on good oil and pressure,

dont idle the engine for more than a couple of minutes thou, idle time is a killer, bores glaze up etc

as long as you have good oil, and good oil pressure it should be fine, if you dont have oil pressure something is wrong and it wont fix it self, so apart she comes.

with the heavy diesels i build, on the first run or dyno run it is loaded up as much as possible, full horsepower, full torque, max rpm. thats done when the engine first gets up to operating tempurature, no being leniant. no idle time.

i always change the oil and filter after say 250km, then at 1000km, them just every 5000km as normal.
for the first couple of services i just run a good mineral 15w-40, then i go back to the good ole syntetic 5w-50, unless its my batty then mineral oil permanently

You been having problems with them too?!!
Is it anything we should know?

So how do most people tune thier engines if they cant rev them past 4,500rpm?
Do they just give it a basic tune, then tune it properly once its fully run-in?

So you went straight to a syn? My mech recons a mineral for the run in, then semi-synth, followed full synth.

I dont think there a definitive method to running engines in. everyone seems to have different methods :)

Very interesting read. He doesn't just sprout random statements without research, most of his work is with motorbikes but it most of it applies to car engines too.

What he says agrees with vvega, rings only take a short period of time to break in. Bearings don't need wearing in, so go for it!

I reckon, give it shit after it's warmed up a bit eh, and chabnge the oil soon as, like 10-20km, just use shitty warehouse stuff.....

Change it again at 100, then 250, 500, and 1000.
