4agze oil leaks???????

Postby lil » Fri Nov 05, 2004 1:27 pm

My mr2 has an oil leak that I cant really determine where it is coming from. It's bloody annoying as when I take it for a drive it starts burning the oil of the exhaust headers, it has also covered the front side of the sump in oil.

I thought it was coming from the oil filter or the oil pressure sender but it seem to be coming from higher up than that, I have heard that sometimes the distributor oil seals occasionally need replacing, might it be that?

I suppose it could be the rocker cover gasket but I have tried tightened the bolts a bit. It is really hard to get a good look at the distributor side of the engine due to the mid engined nature of the car.

Does anyone know what else it might be, any common problems I should know about? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah there is an O-ring in behind the distributor that is known to give out, that would explain oil leaking onto headers and is alomost directly above the oil filter. Its cheap to fix, about $6 for the o ring from Toyota. Seems like quite an excessive leak just coming from the distributor from what you explain though.

Im not sure about the configuration in MR2s but it could also be camshaft seals, ive had to do mine in my ae101. That may explain the front/side of your sump covered in oil too

i would go with the cam-cover gaskets...

Give John Piston Rings (JPR) a call and get some.. the're relatively cheap...

easy fix too.

atleast you'll be eliminating one thing...

Chances are it's both the camshaft seals and the dizzy seals, just like on my redtop. At least the're cheap oil leaks though

Cheap, yeah maybe for the parts and if your doing it yourself. To get to the camshaft seals, you have to take the cam cover off, cambelt, the metal plate behind the cam cover. Then your mechanical will tell you to replace cambelt, tensioner, water pump, oil pump seal etc etc, like what happened to me. Can get expensive pretty quick

$33 incl for the cam cover gaskets, and hopefully not much for the distributor 'o'ring. I will replace them and see what happens, I cant think that anything else would be leaking oil in that area. I just hope it's not the camshaft seals cause I cant be arsed pulling all that shit apart.

Thanks for the advice.

When you pull your distributor out have a look inside the distibutor for any oil... Oil inside means the seal for the distributor shaft could be leaking. It is possible to replace this seal but will take some effort.
I have 3 4age bluetop distributors - I think 2 of the 3 have a leaky seal.
You could replace the seal in one of them and then replace the distributor in your car with minimum time off the road! Let me know.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Well, I did it my self so it was fairly cheap, just takes a bit of time redoing the timing. All up only about 2 hours, plus I learned quite a bit too :D

If only the car didn't get totaled the day after

8O yeah heaps of toyotas do it after bout 100000k's. My fx does it from all over, leavin a big drip each time i park. I heard it's from heating and cooling of the motor, and doesnt need repairing considering how much oil is lost each amount of k's. my factory oil pressure gauge doesnt show much effect from the lil leak. Im geussin mines from the previous owners not using gtx proteck-recommended oil, and also i think it's been wound back! unless you want to fuss around makin ur motor mint...i, like most mechanics say it aint worth fixin!
