3SGE questions

Postby Caveman » Tue Nov 09, 2004 2:37 pm

My car feels a little flat for what it is. Im running a gen1 3sge with TVIS intake ports and not major mods. I've just been out and theres a hill I like to test on which is about 150m long and quite steep. I drive from the bottom to the top and see how fast im doing at the top. The results

My mums 5afe corolla 4 door manual (rated 80kw): 70kmh
My GTR celica auto  (rated 120kw): 75kmh

My dad recons the injectors could be screwed. Im thinking of replacing them but don't want to if i dont have to.

Were going to take apart the head over the christmas holidays to do a valve grind and polish (i've been told not to port a big port). I'm thinking of replacing the tvis manifold with a small port. Would this make any extra power? Would there be any complications?

I know this sounds very general, i've done a search but didnt find much, but are there any other problems that could slow down a 3sge.

Thanks in advance.

Before you try new injectors, try some injector cleaner. You can get it for like $12 from Repco and its enough for 3 tanks worth.
If it doesn't make much of an improvement, its no biggie, only $12. Better than buying new injectors to find theres bugger all difference.

Of course, if then injectors ARE stuffed, the cleaner isn't going to make any difference. But yea, its a cheap test :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

The auto really kills the performance aye, try to find a 5-speed ST162 at pick a part and grab all the bits for a manual conversion, my first car was an ST162 GT and it used to love hills, I had a few basic mods and it felt quite a bit faster than both the 20v's I have driven and my old AW11
Any additional power the ST182 has is offset by the weight and so i would stick to the engine you have and put your money into the manual conversion.
If the injectors were leaking then you'd be overfueling by quite a bit and you'd probably notice a lot of black smoke and if one or more was stuck closed your engine would've died from detonation already.

Will a st182 manual box fit in a st162. I know (from what i've read) that all S boxes mate up perfectly but what about the mounts?

Has anyone done this conversion?

Is the car FWD? (I'm so ignorant tonight  )

I've got a spare corona box in average condition..... somewhere.

Yea its a fwd.

Is the conrona box complete? I'd be very interested. The condition doesn't matter too much as long as all gears work and the synco's arn't too bad. I don't really trash my boxes.

I assume its a 5 speed?

I think you may need the clutch forks? I think the $&#$% at the workshop broke them. It didn't like changing into second from third that much... but wasn't too bad.

5 speed.

Also not sure about clutch/pressure plate etc.... Haven't had a look since I got my car back.
