Lower'n a 1980 DX Corolla

Postby mij1 » Tue Nov 09, 2004 3:22 pm

I've just got a 1980 DX Corolla sedan and I want to get it as low as I can legally. I wana know the best way to bust it, like what springs and shocks and any tricks etc.

Cheers

get some ae85 shocks for the front, get some ae92GT shocks and make short stroke shocks out of them (refer to www.club4ag.com) then either get some ae86 aftermarket springs (best option cause you can choose your spring rates) or chop the original springs (will still be safe cause they dont have a closed coil anyway and will still be captive with the short stroke shocks.. only problem is the spring rate will most probably be too soft you may run out of spring travel if cornering hard.. as for the back jsut get some king spring superlows.. if you still want it lower at the front you will have to cut the shock cartridge and take out however much you want to lower it by..
if your going to the trouble of that then you may aswell upgrade the brakes at the same time (get some big vented corona ones or similar)
it is important you go for the short stroke shocks as you cant get much out of lowering the front before the springs will become un-captive, and it will bottom out cause the piston sits too low in the strut case.
you can make your own suspension/brake combos quite cheaply, just keep an eye out at pick a part and wreckers, there are usually ae85 shocks selling on the board too for cheap.

you can get king superlows pretty cheap ~$400 if you fit them yourself...

you can compress them for $220 at snells springs, but the ride is kinda bumpy & not-so-legal & not-so-safe, unless you compress your shocks, which are $60/corner at autolign....

if you want perfect suspension ~$1000 upward talk to ya suspension guy
if you want legal, low & safe, King springs ~$400
if you want cheap & a wee bit dodgey ~$220 snells springs
if you want CHEAP & DODGEY ~$free

"lowering by black & decker" lol
