Unsealed AE92 rear shocks

Postby neon_spork » Mon Dec 13, 2004 6:47 pm

Is there such a thing as an unslealed rear shock for an AE92 than i can pull apart and put inserts into?

I have been looking rond and the all seem to be the sealed ones.

I would doubt that you will find a so-called unseald shock you can put inserts in. Most aftermarket replacements are sealed/welded shut as part of the manufacturing process which makes rebuild ineffective. Your best bet would be to make up a lower mount to screw/weld onto the insert if you wanted to go the insert route which is basically the same as a lot of the top of the range Jap coilover setups, they use an adjustable insert(though usually rebuildable) with the bottom mount threading on to them, this gives ride height adjustment without shortening the shock stroke.

Neon,
There were some rear shocks for AE92 that had a theaded to seal but they are very hard to find.
You can buy a threaded flange from some suspension shops that you can weld on to the existing leg once you've cut the top off and removed the inner bits. You need to work out the right height to cut the shock so that the nut is a good tight fit over the insert. It's not too difficult.
These are about $20 each.
If you can't find any in your area try MacLennan Performance in Wellington. 04 38015140. They get them made & usually have them in stock.
A TRD insert comes with a couple of top nuts. Other brands may also.

I don't know where you get your ideas from atmosports but an insert is called an insert because it's an inner part. You don't want to be welding anything onto it, particularly if it's a gas insert.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy replacement sealed shocks, unless you want soemthing adjustable & even them you could more than likely get a koni/bilstein/tein that'd be a straight bolt in.

I have & still do from time to time weld on gas charged shocks/inserts as sometimes it'sa the only option but I basically always weld with the shock/insert in a bucket of water if I can't pull it down, most car shocks are still twin tube design so you'll only distort the outer tube which will not effect damping unless it's bent so far it's distorted the inner tube which only happens when you bend them.

Im doin this at the moment and all u have to do is chop the top off your existing ae92 shocks and then drill a hole in the bottom off the shock and im using koni inserts and this just slides in and u bolt it up from the bottom 8)
