What oil/filter to use on expensive rebuilt 4age

Postby ChaosAD » Thu Jan 20, 2005 5:12 pm

I know not to use the cheap repco filters on expensive engines, but what about running them in, should I still use a genuine filter?
As for oil, whats a cheap oil that isnt too cheap quality?

It a fresh engine, so the only thing it will be blinging up is my rubbish bin after like 800km or something.
This is why im contemplating getting a cheap filter, but maybe the fact that it is fresh makes it even more vital that I use a good filter.

Get a Fram or a Valvoline filter from Super Cheap, most cases they are cheaper than repco's cheap Ryco filter.

I think your filter is a Fram PH4967, same as a Valvoline VO7 (if I can remember right).

What about oil, should I use some of that cheap caltex stuff in the grey container for like $15? or a good/reasonable quality non-synthetic oil for about $40?

Mobil used to make a proper running in oil. IIRC it was a straight 30 grade so either try fing someone who stocks it or Pennzoil and Penrite make a 30 grade so I would be goin with them.

Oh and lawnmowers use 30 grade oil 2!!

If your engine has been assembled using a moly/graphite
assembly paste, you should change the filter after the first
half hour or so of running. This stuff can block the oil filter media.
If it doesn't fit, force it.
If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

If you cut open a repco filter compared to a toyota filter you'll never use a repco one again. There is quite a bit of difference.
