Mod my 4age? Convert to 4agze? or 4agte? What should i do

Postby LEVIN GTV » Fri Jan 28, 2005 9:14 pm

Hey guys,

So far everyone on this website has been more than helpful and i appreciate all the info ive gained from my date of membership. But now, after owning my car for about 2 months i have come to a cross roads.

Situation:
- 1988 AE92 Levin (jdm)
- Stock 4age 16v
- JDM Red/Black Top, TVIS 94kw
- 40 000kms from new!!!

Now in seeking more power im trying to decide whether i should modify my engine, or do a conversion.

4age - 20v extractors, 2" mandrel exhaust, pod filter, cold air intake, possibly cams (cost around 2k).

Otherwise could i put all the supercharger gear, or turbo gear onto my motor and run low boost? what would be the implications in doing this? this would save money doing a conversoin and still allow me to run low boost under about 9psi. How would this option weigh up compared to converting to ze?

4agze conversion - cost around 4k. would purchase a ae92 front cut and pretty much swap the engine over. now after doing alot of research, the 4agze seems a smarter way to go, with more torque and more outright horse power. better base for modifying in later years.

4agte conversion-problems with this are engineering and would cost inexcess of around 4k.

So i am having trouble whether i can justify spending 4k on an engine conversion after i just bought the car.

What do you guys think i should do? Because my engine is in such good nick, it would be a real waste to get rid of it.

If i did go gze, would it be best to buy a front cut? If so id obviously have to look for a map ze, out of an ae101.

Remembering im in Australia, and parts arent as readily available as NZ.

Please shed some light if you guys have the time,

Many Thanks
Andy

Just turbo the motor you have now.

either run moderate boost levels ie 10psi or less

or fit aftermarket ecu and upgrade injectors / pmup and run 15psi

you'll get good results

What exact parts would i need? and what are they generally worth?

obviously i will need:
- manifold
- turbo
- aftermarket ecu??? or could i run standard?

Would my gearbox stand up to a turbo?

How much should i budget to do the turbo conversion? Wouldnt a gze conversion be easier?

Is my current block up to turbo capabilities?

Did you turbo a 4age or a 4agze evlgtz?

Hmm... If going for a turbo, I'd say you'd want to use a ZE engine rather than a normal 4AGE. Even if you ran low boost, you'd come into problems with internals getting damaged after a short period of time.
The ZE would handle it much better as the internals are stronger as stock.

I mean, people say "Yea, a stock 4AGE/B16A will handle 10psi no probs". What that actually means is that it won't blow up straight away. Would be better to play it safe and use an engine that is made to handle boost.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yeh exactly, thats what i was thinking. But ze costs alot more. Basically im of the impression that longer term, a ze conversion is better value for money

nope dont mean that at all.

Will handle the jandle easy as with the right tuning.

10psi is nothing on a 9.4:1 comp 4age

Ok;

So i will need the following parts if i were to turbo the ge.

GZE ECU and map sensor
-Turbo, manifold and dump pipe (duh)
-Minor mods to the exhaust
-Intercooler (Aristo cooler donated by Norbie)
-Intake pipework (mild steel + a few silicone bends and joins)
-Greddy emanage (we could have just put in GZE pistons)
-Dyno tuning to get the emanage tuned properly

If i were to do a gze conversion however, would the 4agze motor drop straight in, only needing to hook up the ecu and loom? Ie. would i get away with the 4age box etc?

Doing the 4agze conversion what else would i need other than the motor, ecu and loom to drop it into my car?

Looking at the turbo option again, if i were to turbo my motor if i dropped in a set of gze forged pistons, would that solve the problem? or would i also need to drop the compression of the ze?

What are the advantages of turboing a 4agze over a ge?

a set of gze pistons for $85 each from mr revhead would solve a few of your problems,

im planning a turbo job at the moment its a redtop ge, i will be rewiring and using a map gze computer, fitting a set of gze pistons, and basically then i have a gze

i will be using just the standard ge box for now, ideally id want the gze as it is more robust and has bigger axles and flywheel, clutch assemblies

possibility of getting a hold of this motor:

ae101 4agze motor, just re-built, custom turbo set-up custom turbo manifold, T28 ball bearing turbo, PWR front mount intercooler with piping, turbo smart blow off valve.

what else would i need to drop this into my car?

- dump pipe
- intake pipes?
- ecu? could i run gze ecu or need after market ecu?
- loom?
- gear box? would my gbox be ok to run this motor with?

what would be problems encountered when doing this conversion?
