st182 celica running problems! help!

Postby blitzr4 » Mon Feb 14, 2005 4:58 pm

Hey guys,

Got given this celica a while ago and it was running mint then gave it back to the previous owner as he needed it back....he has now gone overseas has has given the car back in my hands but i cant get it to go properly...

now to cut a longer story short heres what happened, the battery went dead when he stopped using the car so he got a new one...he put it in backwards (polarity wise)...didnt realise until i had went over and checked to take the car...put it in the right way and it started but then died out overnight.

jump started it the next day and i think they werent jump safe cables or took them off in the wrong sequence? cause as i took them off and the cars mirrors, heater and wipers went on and off like crazy but i drove it home like that anyway.

ive charged the battery numerous times now but it keeps loosing charge and now it looses charge after u turn the car off!, also when driving it the rev needle goes crazy at around 5000 revs and looses power??

im guessing it could be a number of things like ECU, altenator and a relay for the power drain?

well what can you expect for a free car i guess? but i would like to use it for a daily driver.

any help appreciated and cheers in advance :D im new to learning my way around toyota's as im a mitsubishi man...

Cheers again,

Richie

im in South Auckland...

had the multimeter out before and i was getting the same voltage at the battery as i was at the altenator...with the car on and the car off but then turn the car off and the battery drops to a voltage where the car wont start again...so im guessing its a charging issue?

then again i aint the smartest with a multimeter :?

Are any of the dash lights on when the engine is going? That is a tell-tale sign the alternators bad, but it really does sound like a bad alternator, try and get a good 2nd hand one with a warranty, they're not hard to install on the Celicas.

If you still have this problem, check the Alternator fuse in the engine bay, most likley it was blown when the battery was put in backwards. Could be cheeper than a Alternator.
Just remember: The glass is neither half full nor half empty, it is merely the wrong size
