Hey all, Recently my gearbox in my ae82 fx-gt has started crunching going into 2nd and 3rd. It seems to be worse when I first drive it off in the morning and there is nothing I can do untill it has warmed up a bit. Anyone else had this happen to there gearbox? I was told by a friend that you can get one of the later model levins or corollas gearbox and itll bolt straight on? Any comments would be sweet.
sounds like your synchros... changing your gearbox fluid might help as a temporary cheap solution... a replacement gearbox is your best option though... AFAIK the later 4age gearboxes will bolt up no problem but I would be concerned about driveshafts being compatible. I'd suggest just getting a replacement gearbox in good condition as I cant see a lot of advantages in getting a later gearbox vs cost and hassle
The fact that it works better once warm, might indicate that your gearbox oil is ruined or very low, it may pay to check the oil first.
Other than that make sure your clutch is working properly, mine did that a while ago, and the release bearing was sticking on the shaft when cold, so it was quite hard to change gears until it warmed up, 'cause the clutch was not completely disengaging.

As Mark said, new oil will help no end (Redline is very good, but very expensive ), and have your clutch adjusted, to make sure its engaging properly.

Ok cheers Ill look into that this weekend. I recently put a new clutch in so it might have something to do with that. Also I will replace the gearbox oil. How often are you supposed to replace the gearbox oil anyway?

Ohhh ok thanks, I have no clue when it was last done. It has been sitting around for a year or so, might pay to do it. Thanks for the comments ill let you know how I get on.
