Wastegate actuator hose

Postby Andy from the block » Sun Feb 20, 2005 11:01 pm

I read on the net that you could get a little more boost if you
remove the wastegate actuator hose from the compressor outlet and hook it up to a place on the intercooler piping after the intercooler.
The logic stated was that the intercooler provides a 1-3psi pressure drop and would therefore make the wastegate open less if the actuator hose was reading less pressure.

I also heard it would be beneficial to plumb the actuator hose, not just somewhere after the cooler, but actually tapped to after the throttle body.
T-eed off the bov hose for example. (I know people on TS who have done this) Would this actually make a differnce?
The logic was that as soon as the TB closes the actuator hose would read lots of vacuum and shut the wastegate fast? Compared to the standard hose that reads the pressure at the end of the compressor housing where there would be slightly less vacuum (or even a little boost? depending on how fast the BOV could dump the air) and therefore take a while to shut the wastegate.

Im getting a GFB Atomic Boost Controller soon and was wondering what would be the best setup to use it with and why. Plumb into original hose? Plumb to after cooler? Plumb into BOV hose? etc

I have read this somewhere too come to think of it, just never got around to trying it cos the turbo popped and then the engine went bang.

It wouldnt be hard to try and I'd be confident that you couldnt do any harm to anything by trying it. I have heard that the intercoolers are restrictive as well so why not just try it!

Or just get an electronic boost controller and sort out all your worries at once.

Theres nothing wrong with just plumbing in there temporarily, and testing your theory. See what works.

Im no turbo genious, but i understand your theory and cant see any harm in just plumbing the acuater hose in different points in the intake tract, and seeing which points provide best results with wastegate accuation, with the way you drive etc. (plumbing from compressor fowards, of course)

And yea, a boost contoller will eliminate the need to differ the hose placement, as it regulates the wastegate accuation to a tee.

btw, Toyspeed, look at this mans post.
He has obviously done his research, thought about the pros and cons, and posted his thinkings in a totally understandable (and read-able  ) post.

we need more tech questions like this. makes the world turn a bit easier.

Yeah I just bought my boost controller and Iam gonna setup my boost using the hose from the actuator to the compressor housing (factory position) first. Then try and plumb from actuator to BOV hose and see how it goes and whether I can notice a difference.

Will keep ya posted.

Been hooked up my actuator to the same line as my BOV + boost gauge for years, no drawbacks.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

In theroy a good idea,

but my point of view,

If you pipe it after the intercooler, the boost will vary a bit as the intercooler pressure drop will vary as the flow varies through it with revs and load. OK unless yuor on the boost limit and want an accurate control.

After the throttle plate, well,

When your are on about 3/4 throttle, and you want to run 15 psi, the pressure in the manifold may only be 10psi, so the actuator won't open,
and the turbo is working it's ass of,
so how much pressure do you have in you intercooler and piping?????
