Escort 4AGE Conversion

Postby Draizuh » Mon Feb 21, 2005 9:30 pm

Hey, im looking at putting a 4AGE in my Escort Estate wagon. ive seen it done before but im just wondering if anyone here would have any knowledge on the subject.

I know ill need a RWD sump and a t50 gearbox + the engine but what else? Is there a 2 piece toyota driveshaft that i could join to a ford shaft so i could keep the same diff? would the standard escort radiator be up to the task of cooling a 4age? and could i weld mounts off a toyota crossmember to a escort one.

Any help at all would be appereciated!

we have a mk1 escort 4aged the sump has to be cut and turned around as the escort x member is in the way + heaps of little things. I think we covered this not long ago

I just used a single piece driveshaft out of a corolla wagon and swapped rear joint to an escort one. You'll have to relocate brake master cycl and remove tvis plate, i just used a mk3.4.5 cortina master cyc (has outlets on pass side) and bolted it straight to pedal box (through firewall) and made up a new pushrod and replaced fat plastic circlip with two metal ones. I used a laser radiator (short and wide) which was heaps even with turbo conversion. Mounts are easy enough just watch the knuckle on the steering shaft. I had already reloacted battery to boot which made more room, you may or may not have to, it would come fairly close to hitting the dizzy i think.
The escort engine bay is quite small because of how the inner guards are shaped, and the 4age is quite a wide motor compared to the old xflow (and pinto for that matter) and it doesn't fit as easily as you might think, but it does fit, so get to it!

Do you think it would be easier to carb it? Not a big fan of fuel injection. do you know what needs to be done to carb it? I know that id probably need a new dizzy as the computer controls the spark But is there anything else? I wanna put twin sideys on it.:) can get a manifold made up easy. know a guy that makes em for jetsprint boats. he can do the mounts too.

does the t50 fit in the escort tunnel without modification? was looking at a rotor but id need an auto tunnel for that to fit..

Any pics of your install would be a plus too

Sorry dude, i don't have any pics of the install. Personally, i wouldn't make the backwards step by going to carbs but ive never actually driven a carb'd 4age so i don't know. Its easy as to keep it on injection, and much better if you end up wanting to turbo it later on. Also, remember that the injected manifold only just fits into bay, how wide are sidedrafts compared to the injected manifold? Would there be enough room for decent intake air flow?
I was running a k50 in an auto shell, so had no issues with clearance. The manual tunnels are very small and low, i don't know how easily a t50 will fit, or how big they are compared to an xflow gearbox, id imagine you would get away with beating the tunnel around to make it fit, unless you can weld etc and then its no problem anyway, cos you could cut and shut it to suit.

Id keep the injection but after seeing the trouble ke70wagon20v's been having with his i thought id steer clear hah.

i found a auto tunnel cut out of a Ghia for pretty cheap but i dont know wiether anyone i know could weld good enough for the cert mans liking :)
