"Best" oil to use in 4AGEs

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Fri Mar 11, 2005 10:32 am

Okay, I want to specifically know what grades I should be using in my Blue top. But I'm sure that people would like to hear about other 4AGEs too.

At the moment I'm using 10W40 (semi-synth). But was looking at some 5W30 (full synth) as the price was quite similar.

I used to use about 10-40 no synth in mine when I had it for 6 years. only used about 500ml between 5000km changes and never had an issue with the engine.
Once more people have put discussion into this it should go to FAQ section I think as it comes up fairly often... :D

i know with 20v's you cant put anything lighter than 10/40 in them as they burn it, i found it ran best on 20/50 redline lol but not everyone can afford that, now im finding 10/40 magnatec is a mint oil

I've been running 15W-40 Castrol GTX Protec but only because that's what the previous owner was using. That and it was leaking and using a bit so I thought it was a good middle of the road option. Now with winter coming and fixing the leaks I'll probably go to a 10w-40 Valvoline semi-synth.

The other thing to remember is the grade of oil too, this is just as important as the viscosity. The page here is a good read: http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbible ... bible.html

Mosts oils wont make a difference, middle-of-the-road standard 15W40 should be all you need unless you've got some big mods. GTX2 Protec 15W40 in mine, probably just cause thats what we use at work on the majority of cars

Use Penrite in my 4AGTE. Seems all good so far (first time trying it and oils still nice and clean after a months use)

using Mobil super XHP 15-40 in my bluetop.
I'm with the guy who says just use a good middle of the range oil. Super XHP was about $24 from memory.
I figure the bluetop was designed in 1982 or 1983, so any modern oil has got to be way better than the oil which was originally specified

So what's the factory "recommend" rating?

I'm using Magnatec for the oil gripping metal part of it. Gotta be good for ya engine I reckon.

I also look at the API rating of the oils. I usually buy SJ. For a 4age, I never went below SF, which was still of a much higher standard than when the 16v's came out many moons ago.
Currently I think the latest ratings are SL (for spark engines) and CI-4 (for compression engines- i.e diesel)
If you go to places that sell cheap as oil, like $10 for 4+ litres and look at the rating some are as low as SG, which is way out of date.

The Castrol range (which I use) is mostly SJ/CF so I've tended to not worry.

Was looking at some Castrol Forumla R cause of the small price difference between the entry grade Formula R and Magnatec...

According to the manual factory recomendation is for "10W-30 to 20W-50 SF/CC or better" grade, for normal new zealand temperatures 10W-something is fine.
I have used 10W-40 magnatec in all my cars with 3000km oil AND filter changes, 100% clean and uses no oil at all.
Apart from my old MR2 SC which I put 5W-50 pennzoil in but that's too expensive.

The "unique molecular attraction" etc. blurb on the oil packs is the male equivalent of the stuff they write on "anti-ageing" creams and "look ten years younger with BOSWELOX!" "make your hair even shinier than with our last product!" etc, marketing BS lol!
Nice to think you are putting something good into your engine though... my mate reckons he can drink synthetics they are just soooo goooood

Now there's a good experiment...

Dip a metal rod in to magnetec, another into "normal" oil (protec?), and a third into motor up or X1R. Hang them all up and check back ever few hours to see what's happening...

Must start this experiment. Maybe when i get home...
