4age idle droping

Postby dxtawagon » Wed Mar 16, 2005 10:58 am

when my rwd 4age (rwd injected manifold) is warm the idles drop really low when you come up to a stop and push the clutch in, it never stalls but drops really low then climbs back to about 6.5, 7 revs, also idles slightly ruff when warm too.
could this be the timing?
also has flat spot when ruvs over bout 5 tho, wheras my old gt twincam would rev right up smooth all the way?
the engines getting pretty old so thats more than likely the problem

any ideas?
cheers

air leak

Don't count out the possibility of the engine wear being excessive. Oil leaking past the valve guides will have some effect with the idle being rough. Check around the inlet manifold for leaks with soapy water solution brushed around the gasket mating surfaces. Also check vacuum hoses, any cracks or breaks in hoses can cause air leaks. Have you checked the fault codes on it aswell??

4age

Oh and how long has this been happening?? Have you just got the 4age running with the car sitting for a while? if this is the case fuel going stale could well be a possibility along with heaps of other things too!!!

My 4age ends up with alot of blow by oil in the intake and throttle body. It gets clogged up doesnt run as well. Oil catch can could help fix this problem?

my bluetop does this when it gets warm too, 'cept mine doesn't keep going, it usually stalls at idle after a good run. I'm 90% sure it's the auxiliary air valve as it's a common fault with these engines.
The auxiliary air valve is a little doodad that lets more air in when the engine is warm (over 80 degrees), well that's as I understand it.
I was quoted under $200 for the part from Mr Revhead, and when I got around to checking the Haynes manual there is a good section in there on testing and replacing it. I'll get round to it one day

thanks for the info
theres quite a few hoses and pipes on the intake manifold that have just been shut off, not sure where there ment to go but i just thought because it was rwd in a corolla maybe they wernt needed? i didnt do the conversion so not sure why?
its been a daily driver for quite a while now so that rules out those problems.
ill have a check for any air leaks into the intake side.

yea i have a frontwheel drive FX-GT did the same thing. Mine was a case of gone seals letting air leaks into the engine. Lately its been blowing a little bit of blue smoke and its pissing me off. Owned the car 2 weeks and i think the rings are gone.

Anyone know anywhere online to pick up forged internals or ram tubes for 4AGEs from? im considering removing the TVIS system and making it straight NA.

ok so the problem seems to be getting worse?, its started stalling when really warm, ive had a little look around on the intake side and cant see anything out of place or any air leaks?.
anyone have any other advise?, could a new intake and exhaust gasket help out? might seal it a bit better?

it happens even if im not fanging it but only after driving up a hill, ie driving home 2 west coast it always happens same spot at top of waitakeres?, thinking its just when it gets that little bit warmer?
any help appreciated
thanks

my 4age used to do this, i turned up the idle so now it idles when warm around 900-1000 mark. it did still drop but only down to 500 insted of stalling.

i think the problem was because the was water and shit in the dip between the cams (car got broken into leads stolen.. took that cover that covers the dip so shit doesnt get in) getting down by the spark plugs.. worth a check.
