Radiator fan

Postby Andy from the block » Mon Mar 28, 2005 12:09 pm

My car's radiator fan is always on full blast even from cold start.

With the fan on full, the car cannot properly warm up, the warmest it
gets is around 30% up the temperature dial.

When I disconnect the fan, the car heats up well, and can get to half
way up the temp dial no problems and the car feels better overall.

I was wondering if I could splice a switch into the fan wiring and install
the switch inside the cabin to allow on/off switching.
I would also like to install a LED wired up to turn on when the fan is off.

Could someone please give me a step by step on what I would need
to do and what I would need to buy?
(ie: what swtich, how to install, what wire, how to wire up LED etc etc)
cheers

Your fan being on all the time may just mean the thermo switch which controls the fan is broken, or even unplugged.

Try replacing the switch first.

Dont put it on a switch - bad idea. The guy who owned my brothers XA before him did that, and that car has come close to overheating many times. You simply forget about it sometimes.

In saying that, another good way to root and engine is to not allow it to warm up, so you need to get it sorted. Replace the thermo switch, as previously said.

it should go on or near thermostat housing or on the radiator, it is a bronze with white (most cases) plastic soket with 1 or 2 contacts in it...
it pays to change the thermostat as well as you gonna drain some cooland anyway...
some times the fan goes always on when pple remove A/C piping, there is a plug wich needs to be shorted...

The A/C has been removed, so Im guessing I should short the plug
before trying to fix anything else?

What is involved in shorting the plug?
