4AGZE ignitor explained

Postby Tukumi » Thu Apr 07, 2005 3:26 pm

Although the general consensus is that the 4AG-ZE AE101 factory igniter is not compatible with aftermarket engine management systems, there seems to be some confusion as to why that is.

We have just finished a bit of testing and results as follows.

A conventional two channel igniter has two completely independent channels. There are two inputs from the ECU (one for each channel) and two outputs (one to each coil).

The input required by the 4AG-ZE AE101 factory igniter is considerably different. It still has two input lines, however only one line is a conventional ignition input. The other line in a toggle. Basically, every time EITHER coil needs to fire the ECU sends a signal to the ignition input. The igniter makes is decision on which one of the two coils to fire based on the status of the toggle input. This system is identical to that used on the trailing igniter of the Series 4 and Series 5 RX7. Clearly these igniters won't work with an ECU intended for a conventional igniter.

To help anyone trying to wire a conventional igniter into their toyota loom, the pinouts for the 4AG-ZE AE101 factory igniter are given below. The wire colours are the ones on the igniter side of the plug.

1) BLACK - Coil Output no.2
2) BLUE - Coil Output no.1
3) YELLOW - Tachometer drive
4) GREY - Ignition feedback from igniter to stock ECU
5) WHITE - Toggle input
6) PINK - Ignition input
7) TAN - +12V Power
Body of Igniter - GROUND (very important)

Basically the 4AGZE ignitor is only good for factory toyota ecu setups, and is no way useable for aftermarket ecu's eg Link, Microtec etc
