4AGE COLD AIR/ INTAKE SET UPS *PICS AND HELP NEEDED*

Postby LEVIN GTV » Wed Apr 13, 2005 3:37 am

Hey all,

I have an ae92 levin, stock intake, air box, panel filter etc.
Have a few ideas how to do my cold air induction but not 100% sure what to go with.

OPTION ONE
Leave air box, and just put a k&n panel filter in the box. Run a pipe gathering cold air into the outlet of the air box.

What difference woudl this make to my engine? response? fuel efficiency etc?

OPTION TWO
Run a small stainless pipe off the throttle body, adaptor and a pod filter on the end. Then run cold air piping into that.

Will this get too hot in the engine bay? will this actually make any difference? Because ive heard this is no better than the first option.

OPTION THREE
Probably the most expensive but will run a larger stainless pipe off the throttle body running it down to the front guard/bumper. WIll have pod filter on the end.

Is this the best option?

What brand of filter should i use? Willing to do it properly and go for a good brand, dont want to waste my money. Want BEST RESULTS possible.

Could anyone please post up some pics of their set ups and the pros/cons behind them. Any help would be awsome.

In all honesty.

All three options will probably make little difference. Unless you've modded other stuff the factory box/filter is most likely more than capable of supplying sufficient airflow to keep your engine humming...

But personally I'd go for option one. I found on all the cars I've done this they tend to be less effected by "heat soak" type effects when sitting at the traffic lights. Minor improvements in fuel economy. Did a setup where the pipe faced forwards out of the front bumper for that "ram air" effect. It made a little difference when travelling at 110kph on the motorway, but otherwise did very little.

A cleanable filter has the side benefit of saving money in the long run.

Option 1 would be the better option if not wanting to modify much or spend much, but if you want lots of induction noise Option 2 would be better.
Option 3 might get water on the pod on rainy days

ummm... option 4, move battery to boot, build cold air box in engine bay to keep intake cool, keep pod in engine bay.

option 1 for best price/effort/performance

hey I have a ae92 4age fxgt, all i did was put the k&n fillter in mine and i removed the bottom of the box, and put a straight pipe from the throttle body to the box, it works a treat, i have good power from 5 and half revs up

hope that helps you

I Have very similar setup to that 1st link on my 101 with blacktop.
Since no A/F meter my piping runs straight from throttle body to inner guard area with pod filter, i fitted a fxgt bumper with spottie holes which feed straight to the pod and i can put the factory spottie hole plugs back in when it rains. not that i ever have! kaned wgtn to auck in the rain and never had a problem, I wouldnt do that with a cheap ass pod tho!
the k&n's are mint, the tunnel ram on my 350chev has k&n's and they are mint as in the rain. can mail pic of my 101 setup if interested, dont know how to put up on here. my ass mounted dyno picked up a heathly increase with the cold air setup

i run k&n panel in stock box, no ducting though.
fro ease of fitting id run that with ducting, but if you can a proper cold air box with ductign and sheilding will be the best. you want to make sure and duct that points forwards has a grille to stop things gettign stuck in it.

what did you want to know? 400hp in 600kg? and pretty much unusable in any motorsport that has rules. its actually a "fronte" not alto which are even smaller (475cc) but even i have never seen one before.
is e/west mounted behind the drivers seat, no box, chain drive, solid rear axle with single 4 pot & vented disc. identical to a go cart with 16" and 10" wide rims, its a beast and i fear the day i can drive it. should pretty much kill anything put in front of it. i dragged it out of some guys barn.
was hillclimbed 15 odd years ago so im told but really dont know to much about it except that is the most dangerous thing i have ever seen, should be fun!

Do NOT put the filter out the lower bumper. Filters don't pick up a lot of water from rain BUT if you hit a deep puddle the only thing you engine can suck is water. Ever seen an engine that tried to compress water???
having a cold air feed is fine as the inlet to the engine will not be submerged if the cold air feed hits a puddle.

Just avoid deep puddles, btw I have filter in guard just right after bumper (were big plastic resonator was located), funny enough its only ~10cm lower then stock air box would be...
