Disc Brake squeel stop?

Postby TruenoBoy » Sun Apr 17, 2005 11:58 am

Has any body ever used this spray on stuff to stop disc brake squeel?

Do you spray it just onto the back of the pad? just onto the back of the backing plate? or both?

I am using bendix pads which dont normally squeel, I have tried cleaning the calipers, and the rotors have been skimmed a while ago - no signs of glazing.

Anything else which could be causing it? only seems to be when the brakes are cold, but sometimes when warmed up.

Some chaps did work on my gfs cynos (name removed etc)

the result was.... it took twice the pedel to stop >.> wore off again, and the sqeek came back, and thankfully so did the brakes X_X.

she nearly rear ended a starlet :(.

to get the same sort of feel, just turn off your ignition when driving, and pump the brake 3 times... thats what hte braking felt like (no assistance).

horrid feelin!

What the hell are you on Cozmo?

TruenoBoy, we use that stuff on any set of pads we put in at work. And we only really use the Bendix AD pads unless the customer is wanting to go cheap (and those usually come back sqealing). You spray the stuff on the back of the pad (facing away from the rotor), put the anti-sqeal plates on the pad if it has any and spray them too and chuck your brakes back together.

Might pay to roughen up the brake pad surface on a bit of concrete too (a dozen figure eights kinda thing) and bed them in again just to make sure. We've had a couple of people come back with cheap pads making noise and the Wurth anti-noise stuff we usually use doesn't always work on them. The red CRC product from Repco does the trick though, might be worth getting a can.

another thign to look at could be to make sure you have all the little clips and springs etc, some cars use several to stop the pad moving about.

I agree with HRT, WTF Cozmonz?

Bendix Advanced pads are shit (you get what you pay for!) and most of the time will squeal.
We use anti-squeal spray all the time with good results. Whoever did the brakes on Cozmonz's GF's car must have been a clown and may have sprayed the contact side of the pad!

Thats what we use and haven't had any come back making noises. Pretty good for a road car, get hot after a couple of hard stops though.

Yeah, sounds wierd. The stuff doesn't change how the pedal feels at all. Probably pay not to name names on here either Cozmo

This just shows that if you don't know what your doing you should *never* do anything to your braking system. I use brake quiet on the back of my pad where the piston meets the pad shim and it works a treat.

Im beginning to think that myself :).

Cynos goes in.... later that day we return

*so, anything wrong with her brakes?*
*Nothing at all, fine!, just a little sqeeky, we sprayed some anti-sqeek stuff on, should make the noise go away*
*Oh ok, cool, cheers*

>.> We go for drive, she nearly rear ends a starlet

So, id say they did it completely wrong . Im not by any means a pro on brakes, so i didnt care to ask, them knowing more than i do....

Looks like i wont be going there again :S.

Personally, I'd never use that red spray on anti-squeal stuff. I've seen that used on our rental cars, and I believe that was the cause of a lot of squealing brakes. I use a thin layer of copper-kote between the shims and the pads. It withstands temperatures of up to 1000 deg celcious, and as most road brake pads disintegrate around 500-600 deg celcious, it's in no danger of turning liquid and running off the pads.

BTW, the best commonly available road pads I've found are from Repco. Lucas TRW pads. They come in a green box and have part numbers starting "GDB..."

cheers

I thought squeaking brakes usually ment they are:
A) Getting low on meat
B) Have a stone in them
C) There are clips or some shit which stop squeaking - somethimes they can come off

I dont know where the stone thing came from. It'd be a tight fit to get a stone in there, and doesnt seem too likely to me.

From my experience, it doesnt matter what pads you use, all are susceptible to a certain amount of squeal - generally because it's not the pad that squeals, but the backing of the pad against the piston/caliper. The antisqueal stuff, from what I understand, is just a tacky substance that goes in the backing of the pad, and is quite effective.

we get quite a few cars coming into work with squeaking brakes.
more often than not its just a small stone stuck under the pads, easy fix.
usually we clean em up a bit & put some antisqueal on them too just to be sure.

seen some nicely scored discs from stones stuck in them too!
