Power FC Tuning

Postby Akane » Thu Apr 28, 2005 6:58 pm

After deciding that all the rich kids will be driving Gen 3 MR2's, and the Poor kids are left with the Gen 2, I'm keeping my AP Engineering Power FC.

I installed it without the commander, tried to start it, it'll idle for 2 seconds then dies. So I plug in the controller and start it, it goes :/

but things have been fine since then, I'm still using my AFM for it's air temp sensor (although highly inaccurate since I should be measuring post charge temp), no error no nothing. Just plug, and play.

I think I've gained at least 20hp from the butt dyno, maybe because of it's agressive timing and fueling.

Now I've put it on peak monitoring mode. my injectors are sitting at 75%, knock goes at high as 23! Ignition peak is 54. Wow. boost is at +0.64 Hg/mm or whatever it's called.

is my knock too high? I've done 1 x 1st gear pull and it revs past 6k (the yanks said you have to get Gen 3 ignitor... lies). I'm thinking of pulling the timing a bit, what you guys think? knock 23 too high or is it acceptable?

As Nemesis and fivebob said.... this ECU is the best $$$ I've ever spent on my MR2

Oh, on that 7k rpm pull, I noticed my right blinker light flashed a bit, is it the cool built in feature of a shift light or am I just seeing things? :D

Theres an PFC manual floating around on the net for the RX7 , it may pay to find that so you can read up on some of the units functionality. I appear to have lost my copy. Anyway, IIRC from two years ago, the check engine light will flash with knock values above 50-60. So if your not seeing the knock light flash and your knock is much lower, I wouldn't be too worried.

I do remember my tuner commenting the stock map [at least on the Gen3] had quite a silly amount of timing advance and plenty of fuel so its probably not going to be optimal for extending thrashings.

If my memory serves me correctly my peak knock was around 45 after my tune....

so, is it safe to say I can boost it up a bit more / advance the timing some more / lean out the fuel, since i'm way below the 50 mark?

Akane : If you get stuck give Damian @ A1 Turbos a call as he has experience in tuning Power FC's. He can also do a quick trip around the block to make sure you air/fuel ratio is ok for next to bugger all $$.

47 knock today, and during the day (i didn't have the logging up) I saw my check engine light flashed

not good, time to pull some timing

It may not be timing, though the stock map is a bit to far advanced and should be changed if you're running > 12psi boost.

The other reasons for the light to flash are injector duty cycle to high. or boost exceeded the preset warning value. Both of these will flash the CEL for 0.3sec, excessive knock (>60) with flash the CEL three times for 0.1sec each time, so it's easy to tell what is happening.

Wildcard tried to pull base timing by -3 degrees and it lowered the knock reading by quite a bit.

It's all working fine now. Will dial up the boost once I get this piece of rubber hose sorted.

Okay, found my problem why I couldn't go past 0.64 bar and had a hasitation problem. The 2 slits are about 2cm long, it was hidden on the underside, didn't realise until I took off the pipings today. Toyota wants $115 for a replacement and ex Japan. Hmm okay.

Just use silicon hose, be more readily available.

I bought a 2.75" to 2.5" from TWSTD, and it fits like a glove.

Today I dialed up the boost to 0.80kg/cm^2 and got 80.0% injector duty cycle. which is pretty damn perfect, knock was a low 18.

At night the colder air causes it to boost to 0.89 kg/cm^2 and 84% injector duty cycle. It's like a bat out of hell, I'm tellin' you. 2nd gear pull I can feel every single bump on the road cause the tires really want to lose traction (going uphill) and it's not a very comfortable feeling when you're doing 70kph and raising with an angry 3S-GTE :P
