4agze reliable?

Postby Lunchie » Sun May 01, 2005 1:01 am

Hey guys ive narrowed my search for a new car down to sumthing in the levin model....
im curious if anyone here has experience with the long term reliability of their gtz's....
id be really keen to buy one over say a bzg because of the extra torque but its dam near impossible to find them in a 93/94 (the only years im prepared to buy them in) and with lowish kms....

I can only really only justify buying one if its ganna be a reliable car that wont break down and screw me and my uni budget (read "stuff all")....

Basically im just after any storys gtz owners have of the maintainence levels towards their cars and also how hard they drive them as well (because it would effect how much they break down) ....
anyone who doesnt own one but has knowledge would be great to hear from you too :)

they are great engines
ive owned 3 now and they all been pushed hard,
one had done like 230k then i turboed it and it still went strong,
compression test was down to 105psi, but still drove and ran sweet.

ive never personally had any problems really, apart from stupid stuff that was my own fault.

biggest problems:

letting s/c run out of oil
letting engine run out of oil.

both is bad. as they are a 4age..... not a lot goes wrong if basic maintaince is done.

check out the for sale section here... these a good one going CHEAP. if your looking, snap it up

oh only other prob would be s/s. but thats no bigger

Looks pretty tidy. And its a Trueno, stand out from all the Levin's!

As with all cars, would be best to check it out, but it's in Auckland and you're in Dunners...

$6500 seems quite expensive...
Im selling my black GTZ for around $5500 but my mate basically wants to buy it after Im done painting it.

The 4agze engine itself is very very reliable, but the supercharger can be subject to oil leaks etc...replacement superchargers cost around $300 so its not that much of a big deal. There are many people on toyspeed who have owned 4agze's with over 200,000kms (including myself) and some over 300,000kms if I remember correctly without much hassle.

But I mean, keep in mind even if u buy a 1994 GTZ its around 11 years old and you would be wise to budget some money for unforseen repairs or replacement parts etc. Owning a quick car doesnt come cheap :P

290,000kms on mine and still going fine (well, bar the odd seal but thats to be expected). Most of them probably have been thrashed. Picked up my AE92 for $3000, AE101s shouldn't only be a couple more than that.

Might pay to insure the Pontiac and find a lonely looking tree

Great car - buy one! I loved my old one. Like any performance car you are kidding yourself if you think that the previous owner drove it like a grandma. However... the motor is very strong, the gearbox is very strong, the brakes are awesome. A couple of the interior trim bits might need some attention (bloody fan speed controls knobs!)

Rear wheel bearings can be expensive due to the ABS wheel. You can't easily get the ABS wheel off the back of the hub without breaking it off! You have to get it off in order to change the wheel bearing - Toyota will sell you a whole hub if the bearing fails! I'm sure Warrick will give you a good price if this happens.
Superstrut arms - the joints can flog out after about 100,000 to 150,000km Just buy new genuine ones for a couple of hundred each and then drive for another 150,000km.

Give it good oil and genuine oil filter. Check the supercharger oil when you change the engine oil. You will have a big smile on your face.
Not a lot of Later Model GTZs around though, look hard.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Would that be me Luke? :D
Its not advertised as being for sale, but I still kind of want to sell it. It has just clocked up 105,000kms. I bought it at 81,000kms and have not had to have any mechanical work done on it yet. Cambelt and c.v boots are being replaced this week or next, and I will probably have it serviced to, supercharger and gearbox oil etc. Kind of want $6000 for it.

Mine hasnt been too bad, but Ive owned mine since 70kms and things tend to need doing/go wrong around 80-90kms.

Nothing really major though. I drive mine fairly hard and its still very good mechanically.

At the end of the day, how reliable a car is depends hugely on its history. If its been thrashed pretty hard, youll have problems. Itll be more reliable than a Subaru though for sure
