my caldina 3sgte is pinking.....

Postby u4dina » Mon May 02, 2005 11:59 pm

thanx for all the replies inregards to my fuel filter change....i've got a another problem if anyone could help me with.....my ride is a 98 caldina GtT 5 speed manual....
When i pin the accelerator in my car it starts to make a pinking sound until the revs hit about 3000rpm i'm told it's a fuel problem and i've tried using 98 octane etc but this hasn't been able to fix the problem.....i havn't checked the timing i can get hold of a timing light but how can i set it back if its to advancd........if any one has any other suggestions that i can also check that would also be cool....

Checking the timing on a Caldina GT-T isn't a practical option for the home mechanic as there's no high voltage wire to use a inductive pickup on.

Besides which, I can't see any way that you can change the ignition timing without fitting an aftermarket ECU or black box to control it. All the sensors and triggers are fixed there's no way to move them so you're stuck with the factory timing.

However I don't think what you are hearing is detonation as I've never known there to be audible knocking on a 3S-GTE with stock factory knock control. It's far more likely that it's mechanical noise, with the most probable causes being loose heat shields or at worst a faulty cam tensioner.

mmmm thenkas fivebob...im sure its not a knocking noise cos its more like a tinking sound not a knocking sounds if u know what i mean...i had toyota change the cam belt not so long ago....well i'm going to change the fuel filter and see where that takes me i'm hoping for better fuel flow cos i think me driving the tank to really empty a number of times wasn't good for it.....

this is the same thing that my 4afe does as well, up to about 3 grand. needs only a little bit of throttle, and is the same regarless of how far down you push the throttle, once you hit 3 grand, it goes away. good luck on finding out what it is, and please let us know :)

Exhaust leaks around the manifold are relatively common on 3SGTE's but I guess it'd do it all the way through the rev range if that was the case.
If you really wanted to check the timing, the only way to do it on a car equipped with coil packs is to run a conventional HT lead between the coil and the plug and connect the light to that but as fivebob has already mentioned you wouldn't be able to achieve much, I'd start with checking your cam timing and perhaps replacing fuel filters etc might help.

You can actually get timing lights that are triggered off the low tension of the coil. They are very handy. We have one at work.

yea i've given up on the timing thing for the moment...i'll look into the air leak cos my mates got one of those devices thats u can test for air leaks and stuff and makes a sounds when there is one....the car is running fine and like 1598cc said just don't pin it under 3k......i can handle that...
