ignition problem-89 excel

Postby weston01 » Tue May 10, 2005 10:11 pm

hardly an expert, but know enough to (maybe) fix it. I switch the iginition off on my 89 excel and the motor continues to run. I generally need to stall it before it stops. CAN anyone help. Thanks

What fuel are you using??? Try 96/98, if that doesnt help, back off the timing a bit.

Check the water level and condition of cooling system.

What you are describing is known as 'dieseling' its where the engine continues to run because something in the combustion chamber is glowing red hot and acting like a spark plug - hence the engine continues to go when the ignition is off.

The only time I've had this happen to me is when there was nearly no water in one of my cars and it was running way to hot.

The excess heat also could be caused by incorrect timing, so it would be worth checking that.

there is plenty of water in the cooling system and the car seems to be running at normal temp. Can you please explain what i would need to do with regard to the timing? thanks

I can only give you a general idea as I have never seen the engine of one of those.

I'm guessing its carburated which helps a bit.

You want to find the distributor - its the bit with the 4 or possibly 5 big wires going into it at the top and to the side of the engine. (sorry if this is to simple I have no idea how much you already know about engines).

Put a mark where the distributor attaches to the engine so you can reset it to the default place if need be.

It should be held on to the engine by 2-3 large bolts, loosen (not remove) these and turn the whole distributor towards the firewall a tiny bit - 1-2 mm (also guessing here, it could be towards the front but most likely towards the firewall).

Now retighten the bolts and see if it runs, if it starts making a sound like stones in a tin can you need to turn the distributor the other way.
