4AGE Engine Troubles

Postby zandrakweb » Mon May 16, 2005 7:47 pm

I have a Levin AE101 with Silvertop 20v 4AGE with a few problems and im pretty sure i know how to go about fixing them, but i know that you just cant beat a second oppinon.
Firstly, i can hear a chronic tractor/diesel sound near the cam belt, so my first guess is a buggered VVT pulley, but when i did the test on it... nothing changed, i applyed 12v to both pins on the vvt solenoid (this is the correct test ay? ) and it still was clicking, so i dunno wats going on there, would the test still work if the vvt pulley wasnt just worn but completely dead?
Secondly i can hear a hissing sound coming from near the top right hand side of the rocker cover, around the throttle bodies, i can only hear it at idle, and my cars idle is buggered and hangs around 300-400 but sometimes will restore itself to just under 1k ( all so confusing :x ) could this be caused by a really whacked battery? and i couldnt find a hole in any pipes, but that could be due to not lookin hard enuf .
Lastly after all this, my car seems to have lost its pony's and this wasnt a gradual thing, it just happened. it felt like it had no go. i think the best way to describe it is like the engine performing as if it was permanently cold, performing like it would if u just started it on a cold as day and floored it up a hill.. and i think ive lost vvt, ie it never kicks in :( .
Thanks to any1 who can help :(

Because of the low idle and the hissing I would say you have a vacuum leak.

Double check all the pipes have no holes and are plugged into the right places.

If it's still leaking hook up an air compressor to the intake manifold and pressurise it then listen to where the air's escaping.

Also vacuum leaks can cause large losses of power - could solve you other problem.

Ummm.... like any circuit a solenoid will need power to one side and a ground on the other. 12V to both pins will do nothing ;)

Timing belt tensioner

Postby andyztouring » Mon May 16, 2005 10:39 pm

My Trueno (20v 4AGE)sounded like a diesel tractor around the timing belt area, the timing belt tensioner bearing was badly worn, replaced it much quieter after replacement.

yeah does sound like you have a vaccum leak. get a can of crc and spray around the hissing area and listen to see if the revs go up. if they do there is definitly a vaccum leak
want a ae86, dont want to pay 8 grand for one
have to settle for my ae92

code 24 = intake air temp sensor
code 31 = vacuum sensor

so start with pulling off the plug on the afm and giving it some contact cleaner, if that dosnt help you might want to try using another AFM, since both of them errors are in the AFM I think thats your main problem.

with your VVT check it again with +12 and a Ground see what happens.
