wtf, headlight being wierd

Postby AJz » Sat May 21, 2005 9:33 pm

Came home tonight, my brother opened the lounge curtains to see who it was so i flashed the high beam a couple of times, funny thing happened, it went from two low beam lights, to the left high beam, and nothing on the other light, it just turned off, and then when i let go of the stalk (clicks back to low beam) it went back to both on low beam,

it did this for about 10 secs after this, and then suddenly went back to 2 high beams after 10 seconds of flicking and trying to figure out what the hell was goin on, lol.

its neva happened to me before. I had only just started the car cos i had it parked at a friends round the block, so the lights had been on for all of a minute, on low beam while driving.

They seem to be fine now, but im just curious, anyone know why this would happen.

Cheers.
I had vtax :(

Check the filament in the bulb. Sometimes it is stuffed (loose) and makes contact intermittently.

I had this problem with my taillight bulb; my brake 'park' light would work sometimes, and every now and then crap out.

You obviously have a bad connection to the high-beam filament in the light that wasn't going. Headlight bulbs each have 2 filaments, a normal low-beam, and a larger high-beam. When you flick the high-beam, the low-beams go out, and the high-beams come on. If one high-beam isn't going, then its either blown or lost connection, which can happen more often in pop-up headlighted cars, as they get bumped around a fair bit.

Another useless tidbit of info, if you get the light stalk in the exact middle of changing from low to high beam, you get both beams.. :D

I should note my 'intermittent' problem wouldn't be the light going on-off-on-off rapidly... it would be on for a while, then randomly turn off (sometimes without touching the car at all!). I was quite confused because once I tapped the brake light glass (on the outside of the car), and it went back on. Tapped it again, it went back off. 8O

But yeah, its fairly easy to see if the filaments broken.
