alternator wiring

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun May 22, 2005 12:05 am

ive got to swap the end of the plugs over from the 3k alternator plug to the 4age alternator, both plugs have three wires going to them, im just wondering what wires are what.

the 3K plug has:
White wire with black stripe (quite a thick wire)
White wire with blue stripe (slightly thinner than above wire)
White wire with green stripe (same thickness as white/blue)

the 4age plug has:
Solid white wire (very thick)
Creamy/yellowish wire (slightly thinner)
Black wire with yellow stripe (thinnest of them all)

is it just a straight swap with these three wires (no other wiring needed)?
if so, which wires from the 3K wiring go to what wires on the 4age plug?

cheers

I think you'll find that the 3K alt will be externaly regulated, so the wires will be field, earth, and stator,

and the 4AGE will be S,I L which is batt, ignition, and Warning light,

so no you cannot just straight swap them over.

As Matt says, the 3K one will be externally reg'd.

You need to unplug the regulator which I think is on the left inner gaurd, then on the 6 pin plug you will have everything you need to make the 4age Alt. charge. Find a main Batt feed, an Ign feed and the warning light wire in this plug. If your not sure how to do this then go no further and get an Auto-Sparky! Then on your Alt. the thick white is the Batt feed, the black/yellow is your Ign feed and your creamy yellow is the warning light feed. 8)

Good Luck.

thats what an auto-sparky said when I asked him about it and he said it should be stamped on the alternator if it has a built in regulator and i checked the alternator and there was nothing on it. not sure if he meant imprinted in it or just a sticker put on it, cos its been polished at somepoint and all the stickers taken off...

NZ_AE86:
so do I do away with the 3K regulator all together and just use those three wires, or leave the regulator plugged in and just cut those three wires from the plug and connect them to the 4age alternator plug/wires?

The 4AG alt is definately internally reg'd. I had the same issue when I did mine, you can ditch the old reg all together.

You can get rid of the old reg. and ideally the wiring between it and the old Alternator too.
