86 Celica with gearbox issues

Postby PJ » Wed May 25, 2005 12:43 am

Hi ppls. Have just bought an 86 Celica GT-R with a few issues. The windows, fans, and head unit aren't working. And its slipping out of second gear.
I'll be checkin the fuses tomorrow, n if all is right there its off to the auto electrician to sort that one, cos its not really something I can sort out myself in a hurry.
The gearbox however, is it possible its a gear selector? Its going into second fine, and stayin in most of the time, but seems to like slipping out right after its been put in. If I hold the stick lightly it stays in gear fine, I don't have to force it to stay in gear. Whats the problem likely to be? And what kinda prices am I lookin at to fix this problem?

I had the same problem on my first car, a 1988 Corona with the same gearbox. Used to just randomly come out of 2nd gear, then eventually it was coming out all the time, then it started to do it on 3rd. Easiest way is to get a new gearbox, should be able to pick one up for around $100, they're very common and there's a lot of cars that share the same box, anything pre-94, thats fwd with a 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, or 5s engine should swap, try pick-a-part if there's one near you, if you have to go to a normal wrecker its likely to be $300+
