Tires for all weather

Postby AJz » Thu Jun 02, 2005 1:53 am

Hey

Planning on, in the near future gettin mags for the celica, but mainly concentrating on sum good rubber.

i currently have 205's, GT4's have 215's but can easily fit 225's, which is what ill probably go for.

Now living in dunedin it rains half the time, im looking for a really decent performance car that works well in the wet, thats the main thing,

Any price.

Anybody?

If you want better performance in the wet, dont get wider wheels! The wider your tire is, the easier the car will aquaplane in the wet. Because there is more frontal surface area exposed. :?

If you want good tyres which will grip well in the wet and dry, don't get wider tyres.

Just get a decent set of 205 directionals. There must be heaps out there.

What size rim are you going for. A larger rim will decrease the unsprung weight but will come at a cost of comfort. Low profile tyres tend to transfer most road noise. This does vary on manufactuer ofcourse.

Well considering magnesium alloy is lighter than tyre... yes.

Edit: I guess it really depends. I would choose a superlite racing rim over that chrome spinning business.

The dunlop fm901's are good in the wet I used to have them but....

The Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD-3's that I use now kick them all over the place in the wet and are slightly better in the dry as well.

I have 225s on my ST205 GT-FOUR and have had no issues in wet or dry. Dunlop FM901s.

Bridgestone Grid II are very good I have some of these on my wagon, and wet weather grip isn't much worse than dry, or Grid 3 potenza!

Also yokahama A539's are supposed to be very good.

you're talking about st18* series right? 89-91 gt4's have 195's factory, 91-93 have 205's, some 215's can fit, depending on the size of the curb buffer/rim protector rubber bit, and the offset of the rims. 225's will generally only fit if they have no rim protector and if the guards have been rolled. Widebody gt4's can fit 225's quite a bit easier (although the front is getting borderline I think).

When I put the wheels from my st185 with 215's onto a GT-R celica the back used to rub inside the guards on hard cornering. I doubt you'd get 225's on a GT-R without serious rubbing issues.

Anyway, as far as good tyres go, I have Falken Azenis competion tyres on the 16's for my gt4, and they have huge levels of grip, even in the wet. I have Grid III's on the 14's for the gt4 and they're pretty good too, not as good in the wet as the Falkens, but a hell of a lot cheaper

I swear by the Yoko A539s, I ran them on my Sentra for the last 4 years and they grip like a gorilla in the wet. I'd usually get around 40,000-50,000km out of a set of 4 if I rotated them correctly, that's with some "spirited" driving on the open road. The A539 has just been replaced with another model though, can't remember its model number.

Only prob is the price, last set I bought (185x60x14) were $165 a corner, went to buy another set on Monday and they were $240 each. The ol' budget couldn't stretch to that so now I've got some cheaper banana skins on there.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

The a539 ' s have been replaced by the new yokohama c-drives , very similar characteristics to the a539 but for ultimate grip in the wet weather than u can't go past the goodyear eagle f1 gsd-3 , but it depends wot tyre size u have as to wot is available in ur size ! :?
