AE92 Electrical problem: Keep blowing tail light fuse!?!

Postby gmacrae » Sat Jun 11, 2005 12:13 pm

Hi guys, funny problem that seemed to appear out of nowhere with my fxgt, i noticed the instruments werent lighting up at night, so i checked the fuses and one 15a fuse was blown for the tail lights, so i assume the instruments are run thru the same fuse.

If i replace the fuse and turn the lights on it blows instantly :-/

I installed a stereo a week or so ago, but im sure the instrument lights were working after that, I checked the wiring to the tail lights, nothing worn thru that i can see, no wires to the stereo are shorting or anything.

Does anyone have any ideas why this bloody fuse keeps popping? anywhere else i shold check?

Cheers - Gene

Hey man brad here :) had exactly that happen a few times aye, its because of your stereo. What you will have done is used the wrong earth as when tested the auto dim wire of the factory head unit will show its grounded but when you turn the lights on (which would dim the factory stereo) it shorts as you have it connected to ground. Just reatach the earth from stereo to your own earthing point on chassis and leave the othe wire taped up. Hope that makes sense

Brad ur a bloody legend mate! An extremely accurate and correct answer in ten minutes?!?! thats a new record!

thats exactly what i did! used the wire from the old stereo loom that appeared (using continuity) to be ground.

Big ups Brad, you saved me a shitload of pissing round :D
