Super Strut Fun

Postby XS1V » Fri Jul 08, 2005 8:29 pm

Hey im just in the process of takeing out my superstrut shocks from my ae101 levin, have managed to take the rears out easy as but the fronts are a bit different :S Undone everything holding the strut in but yea, both sides wont budge. Is there an easy way to take them out??

Also the reason im takeing them out is to replace a few warn ball joints, do i just replace the worn ones or are there other parts i should replace at the same time??

Thanx :)

You will have to separate top ball joint (or whatever is that) real pain in the ass, the bestway just buy balljoint puller (~$30 off repco) as try with that...

Good Luck

Yip separating the ball joint is a b**ch, tried to do it once myself and gave up. Also trying to separate the lower arm from the strut can be tricky.

Just out of interest, are you replacing the ball joint that connects the strut to the top of the hub? How much did you pay for the ball joint??

Top ball joint:

Two heavy steel hammers/mallets. Hit the steel (on the strut) either side of the balljoint in unison and it will soon pop.

Bottom balljoint:

Tapered long prybar placed between lower arm and small link arm (from memory). One good hard smack and it will pop too.

Mine has been out a few times so I have the knack now.

Once you pop that top ball joint, how do you go about getting it back in to the suspension carrier/hub?

And I suppose both top and bottom ball joints would need to be cracked to replace the top joint right?

I have got mine all done now and you shouldnt need to pop both top and bottom to just change the top. To put it back on you just lever the hub down to hold ball joint tight, works well
