Caldina GT-T Cambelt replacement

Postby Toxic » Tue Jul 12, 2005 10:09 pm

Hey Guys

Would anyone be able to give me some idea of what it would cost me to get my cambelt replaced on my caldina Gt-t. When a mechanic does the cambelt does this also include the other belt which runs the alternator and power steering.

I got two quotes today. One for $1300 for a new belt and a service.
The other was $240 for the belt inc labour

Now these are both extremely different.

Anyone done theirs recently?

Any reccomendations to where i can go that can be trusted to do a good job and not rip me off.

I would of thought around the $250-300 based on previous my vehicles.
Sounds to me like one guy is trying to f#!k you and the other guy isnt.
Whats included in the service?

it's worth noting that 3sgtes (well, gen 2 & 3 ones anyway) have a hydraulic (i think) cambelt tensioner, that retails around $150-300, depending on where you go, and if you replace the idler pulleys (iirc there's 2), then you could be looking at up to $500 worth of parts, especially if you're paying retail Toyota prices. $1300 certainly seems a bit excessive, however. When they say "service" do you think they maybe give a high class "escort" $500 to give it lip service?

does that $1300 include replacing the waterpump as well?
i know on my skyline i got quoted ~$1000 a few times for belt/tensioners/idlers & waterpump.
then just went & bought the parts at staff prices & did it myself

even at staff prices, the parts alone cost me close to $300.
remember with the FWD orientation of the engine in the gtt it will be a bitch to work on, so you will end up paying more labour costs too

Not sure if you want to do it yourslef, but here is a rough idea of what you need to do.

TOYOTA CELICA GT4 TURBO 2.0L DOHC (3S-GTE Engine) 1989 - 99 Timing Belt Installation
TOYOTA MR2 (inc Bathurst spec) 2.0L DOHC (3SGE Engine) 1990 - 00 Timing Belt Installation

Removal

1. Remove Upper Timing Belt Cover.
2. Rotate Engine Clockwise until the Timing Marks are aligned as per the Diagram.
3. Remove Auto Tensioner.
4. Insert Auto Tensioner in vice and compress Shaft back into Body of Tensioner.

Automatic tensioner piston protrusion is 8.5 to 9.5mm.

5. Fit a suitable steel locking pin into the Body of the Tensioner to hold the Shaft in place.
6. Remove the Crankshaft Drive Belt Pulley and Lower Timing Belt Cover.

7. Remove Timing Belt.

Installation

Engine must be cold before fitting timing belt.

1. Timing Marks must be aligned.
2. Fit the Timing Belt in this order:
Crankshaft
Water Pump sprocket
Guide
Camshaft 2
Camshaft 1
Tensioner
Oil Pump.
3. Place Torque Wrench on Tensioner Pulley Bolt.
4. Apply 18Nm Torque Anti-Clockwise.
5. Hold Tensioner Pulley at the correct Torque and fit Auto Tensioner to Engine Block.

6. Push Auto Tensioner against Tensioner Pulley and Torque Tensioner Retaining Bolts.
7. Temporarily fit Lower Timing Cover and Crankshaft Pulley.
8. Rotate engine Clockwise 300° (five sixths of a revolution).
(Crankshaft mark should be at 60° BTDC, see diagram)
9. Loosen the two Retaining Bolts on the Auto Tensioner.
10. Place Torque Wrench on Tensioner Pulley Bolt.
11. Apply 18Nm Torque Anti-Clockwise.
12. Insert a 1.9 mm feeler gauge between the Tensioner Shaft and the Tensioner Pulley.

13. Push the Auto Tensioner against the feeler gauge.
14. Torque the Auto Tensioner Retaining Bolts.
15. Remove the steel locking pin from the Auto Tensioner.
16. Rotate engine one revolution Clockwise. (To 60° BTDC)
17. Re-check gap between the Tensioner and Pulley is 1.8 to 2.2 mm.

If not to specifications, repeat steps 3 to 17
.

18. Rotate Engine to #1 Cylinder at TDC.
19. Check all timing marks are aligned.
20. Refit Lower Timing Belt Cover.

21. Refit Crankshaft Drive Belt Pulley.
22. Refit Upper Timing Belt Cover.

Tightening Torques

Camshaft Gear Bolts................................... 59Nm
Crankshaft Bolt........................................... 108Nm
Front Cover Bolts........................................ 8 to 12Nm
Tensioner Bolt............................................ 52Nm

mitsi and subaru have the highest prices... not uncommon to spend over $400 on parts alone for a cambelt on them

FYI I had my cambelt changed on my 98 GTT for $400.00 incl GST last month. That also included changing out a noisy bearing with another (fan?) belt. I think the cambelt part cost like $80 +gst from memory and the rest were labour.

You also mentioned your quote of $1300 included a service? Well I also had a full service done when I got the car at the same place. It would have cost about $350ish incl gst, but all the spark plugs required to be replaced so that bought it up to $440.00 total for a full service and changing 4 spark plugs.
