Let's talk windscreens....

Postby Malcolm » Mon Jul 18, 2005 4:26 pm

alright, anyone here changed a windscreen before? I'm thinking of doing the one in my mr2 myself as I don't really want to pay $130 to get it done. I know I need that urethane glue type stuff, and I should clean all the old stuff off, run a bead around the edge of the frame, then put the screen on, and leave it for 5 hours or so before I drive it.
Anything else I should know?

Thanks :)

Ive done one just as you described above, turned out fine. I didnt have the car for long, so dont know if there were any long term probs, but I dont see why there would have been.

There is a black coloured primer that windscreen guys use... put on b4 urethane. Use this if you scratch paint. stops rust later on. may pay to put a bead on frame and screen 2b on the safe side.

Just talked to mate at windscreen place. They use either bostik g primer esp for when it over fresh paint or just a black etch primer bought from a spray paint supply shop for in an out jobs... You could always go dwn to ur local glassy and talk them into selling/giving you some the g primer nt cheap and sold in quantity 300ml etc

hmm well I have a couple of litres of etch primer so I will just use that if I need to. I know Sika do windscreen urethane so I will probably go down and get a tube from them. Actually might do this tomorrow as there's not enough work at my job to go in.
