ST185 box options??

Postby peas » Tue Jul 19, 2005 10:24 pm

Well its been notchy for a while and now I really need to give it some attention. Whats the best bet as far as replacements go? I have heard that you can use a ST205 unit... does this bolt up and any other bits that might cause issues and what effect does this have on the performance as far as differing gearing goes?

Whats a 2nd hand box worth roughly as I would prob rebuild that one then just do the swap mission one weekend as the engine has been done and its fairly tidy so I think a thorough job would be worth it. I know they are a C#^t to get out apparently but it has to be done I spose.

I have searched for this with no luck but if this has been done before then a link would be appreciated.

i blew a box on my old one... got quotes on getting it rebuilt but it really wasnt worth it.think upwards of 2g :? either find a 2nd hand 185 box , or 165 facelift as they are the same. or if you can find one a 205 box is a very worthwhile replacement with minimal mods, altho good luck hunting one down.
i ended up selling my car with a blown box and clutch as i couldnt be assed with it.

How much extra hassle is it to fit a 205 box? Im assuming that it bolts up but the gear selector/clutch ancillaries may be slightly different...

I've still got my old ST185 box for sale. 2nd gear crunches, so I'm only looking for $200 for it :) All other gears are fine :)

PM me if you're interested ...

No they are not, different ratios.

ST185 crunching second... Hrmmm

Postby Kevorkian » Tue Jul 26, 2005 2:22 pm

This seems to be a bit of a problem with the 185 box, mine crunches second badly mostly when downshifting and as a result i've tried to not downshift into second anymore as to try and prolong the death of the box altogether.

Also if I give the car a boot in first and shift into second it doesnt tend to like it too much, how ever if I release the accelerator and then ease on into second, I can snap third and forth and even fifth no problems.

My mechanic reckons its because the previous owners probably didnt know how to drive a turbo'd car correctly and gave it too much boost in first and then hit second gear in a hurry trying to keep the rev's up.

Sounds logical to me, but from the sounds of it maybe the boxes are just crap to begin with? :P

Sounds almost identical to my old one.

LOL ... compare a GT-Four box with a WRX box, and then tell me which one you think is crap

Lets not forget you're talking about a box which is at least 10 years old, and probably been thrashed by every owner its had. I'd say a "crunchy second gear" is pretty damn good for being the only fault on a box of that age

Thats how I always look at it. Its a 15 year old car and more often than not considerably cheaper than any other of the jap 2.0l Turbo 4WD's about. 2nd is a B!@#H to downshift to in mine as well. Not cool. Even reverse seems to grind a bit now. Just treating it semi nicely til I got that 2nd box to go in.
