Hand brake problems

Postby method » Wed Jul 27, 2005 11:42 pm

Hey

I seem to have a problem with the rear left brake. It works fine with the brake pedal (hydrolics) but it doesnt work when i apply the hand brake. The rear right works though.

I found that where the brake cable splits from one to two in the midde of the car the wire going to the left brake is maybe 1 - 2 cm longer thus causing the brake not to clap. The left caliper however does move but not enough to clap.

Is there a way of udjusting the wire length going to the caliper? Had a bit of a look but didnt see anything and i dont have a service manual :(. My cars due for a wof soon so i guess i need to do something about it.

The cable couldnt have stretched could it seeing as its only one side thats off :?:. Maybe the wrong cale was used when it was replaced. (only had the car for a coupple of months)

I tried the search function btw ;). Nothing about adjusting the cable to the caliper.

I have a 1986 ae82 NZ new gt corolla with disk brakes up the back.

Thanks for any help
Cheers.

not sure exactly on your car, but even vehicles that have disc brakes up back that I've seen have a drum brake style handbrake (usually located in the hub area of the rear.

depending on where you're taking the car for a wof, you should be able to ask them to adjust the handbrake before they do the wof. should only take them a few minutes :)

also if the handbrake has been incorrectly adjusted its possible for one side of the handbrake cable to stretch more than the other

Yeah i was hoping the wo palce could fix it. I usually bring my car to a testing station so will have to go to a garage.

But i know there are a lot of dodgy (ie dont know what they are saying and fail you on bs) garages arround.

Any good garages in the auckland area where i wont get riped off?

Failing that i could always take it into a garage, mite be a bit of a rip off though for something that simple.

haven't got any ideas on ak garages - i'm in wellington

try asking around the auckland members - i'm sure they'll have enough experience between them to know where not to go

Postby andyztouring » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:26 pm

I had a similar problem with a AE92 Trueno ,Left handbrake not clamping hard enough, all it needed was bleeding on that brake, found out after checking everything else(stretched cables, seized caliper etc etc etc).I was pissed off big time!!!!

The vechicle testing places are a rip off and they dont know half the stuff a normal garage would :? ..., ok maybe thats a bit of a overkill, but i would rather take my car to a garage than a VTNZ place with all the crap stories i hear about them.
Just because a business is small (ie garage) it dosnt mean it will rip you off.
Just my thoughts :|

Oh ive had a bad experience and i have heard a fair ammount of bad things.

I got failed because the guy said i had freyed brake lines so i checked themand they were perfect. He didnt have the slightest clue what he was on about. So i took my car to a testing station and it was all good.

So any good garages in the auckland area that do WOFS and can do minor alterations like the handbrake at a good price?

Ill probably also get my wheels aligned and ballanced there if they ahve the facilities.

Cheers, for the replies.

I dont know what sort of set up you have with your brakes and all, but maybe all thats wrong is it may need adjusting.
If its what im thinking it is, there will be a 12 or 14mm bolt at the back. When you take it off you will see its actually a plug or bung. There should be an allen key slot in it.
If you get this far and it is what im describing, ill tell you more.

If it dosnt have the allen key adjuster, just ignore me
