Diesel oil rather than petrol oil?

Postby Ae92typeX » Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:53 am

People sometimes talk about putting diesel oil in their engines for afew km between changes to 'flush it out' as diesel oils have more cleaning properties.
Why would one not run a good diesel oil permantly in an engine?
A quick trip down to the local repco showed that some (not all) newer diesel oils on the market are rated API SL/CI. As far as im aware SL is the newest spark rating available for most oils, and is well above the reccomended for 99% of the engines we use on this forum. So in theory, is 100% safe and fine in a spark engine.
So yea, just interested in an informative discussion saying why/why not this oil would not be fine in a 'spark' car. :)
Cant believe im still a member here.

Not sure - but I suspect that possibly in saying diesel oil, it could be diesel fuel that they are refering to. In which case, it stuffs your fuel pump and filter.

yea the late model diesel engine oils are fine, look at the technology that valvoline, mobil and the likes of total oil put in to development of their products,

all of the big workshops ive worked in use diesel engine oil in their company vehicles, petrol ad diesel alike.
average diesel oil is from 15w, were as petrol is from 5 / 10w

You have heard correctly Ae92typeX, diesel oil has more detergents in it, therefore better cleaning properties...

AFAIK it doesn't hurt in the slightest running diesel oil day-to-day, as you pointed out, the 'spark engine' rating (API) is indeed present on most, if not all diesel oils.

im pretty sure you'll find that diesel oil doesnt have quite the same lubricating properties as petrol oil, due to the fact that diesel does a lot more lubricating of its own than petrol does.

Right, cause the diesel gets down and helps lubricate the crank bearings and stuff real good aye?

I would be concerned if the diesel was getting near any part of the oil system...

Ahhh now i see. If i want to run my petrol engine on diesel oil, I'll have to fill the petrol tank with diesel as well.

In a perfect world Oil and Fuel should never meet.

*shrug* i guess i interpreted my information wrong.
im still sure that diesel does do some lubricating of its own tho.
now i need to go find where i got the info from & re-read it

You are correct there... the sulpher (spelling) in the diesel fuel
lubicates the Diesel fuel pump...
