Water cooled turbos....Is the water needed?

Postby blackmk3 » Thu Jul 28, 2005 7:04 pm

hey all just wondering my mate has a R30 skyline with the L20 6cyl non crossflow turbo engine

the turbo wosent the happiest so we have made up a adaptor plate and mounted a series 4 Rx7 turbo to the standard L20 maifold, just wondering tho...the origional turbo was just oil cooled and the Rx7 turbo is water and oil cooled

does the Rx7 turbo have to be watercooled? or can we just run oil on it

and if so were is the best place to take a water feed from and a water return

Thanks
Nick

My old corona's turbo was oil cooled only, brought a new turbo off a later model engine with same flange, which was oil and water cooled.

Plugged water *holes*, with washers and big screws or whatever, and just chucked her on.

No problems at all.

Just make sure you use a turbo timer (see turbo timer thread), so the oil dosnt suddenly coak up....

but it should be fine :)

As long as you change your oil regularly it should be fine - had a td04 on the wife's old starlet and that was water and oil cooled, blanked off the water cooling part of it when we put it on her car and never had a problem with it.
Ran like that for about a year before we sold it 8 months ago have seen it driving around last week still going strong :)

Your taking the piss aren't you??
Water is a cooling medium in the turbo and oil is a cooling/lubricating medium.
