Front mount on st205

Postby TRDmod » Wed Aug 10, 2005 12:00 am

I am getting a front mount on st205. now i know that a big front omount is the foundation for more boost. but just by putting in a good large front mount - will that imrpove power output? ?

feedback please...
thanks

Im not sure how efficient the intercoolers are on ST205's, but it probably wont improve power, but will keep it more consistent ;)

The standard ST205 W/A top mount should be good for up to around 350hp before you need to look at improving on the job it does. A front mount cooler at anything less than that is a bit of a waste, and will only add lag without any really significant gains. Your money would be better spent elsewhere on the car (unless of course you've already done everything else :D ).

The WAI was good enough for the cars when they ran in the WRC so they're going to be good enough for street/race use (unless you are going for BIG power)

Just remove the unit, clean it out properly with petrol etc and then lag the underneath and sides with heat reflective material (available from most race supply shops) and then pop in some water wetter. That'll help keep temps lower. You could even fit a water sprayer for the pre rad or even fit a larger pre rad.

Yep I agree with cleaning it out & lagging it, also strip the paint off & polish it for the Bling Bling look & assist cooling. Put in some Toyota 'Red Stuff' & also run the pump constant.
Plus not forgetting a aluminium heat shield underneath.

Cheers, Mark

Don't agree with that one. Puts extra strain on the pump running it full time which leads to premature failure.
Also, the WAI system isn't so effective. Much better to have the water in the top mount part warm/hot when stationary. When you open the throttle and the pump starts up, you get a nice 'shot' of much colder water to absorb all that intake charge heat. If the pump was running full time when you're not moving, you run a very high risk of heat soak throughout the entire system. This is due to the lack of airflow through the pre rad. If it was better to run the pump full time, then I'm sure Toyota would have set it up like that intially. I'm keeping my pump as it left the factory - far more efficient IMHO.

Nice bit of assumption and speculation there Gary :P. In actuality the intake air through the heat exchanger contributes to cooling efficiency off boost. I don't know the specifics of the GT-4 set up, but some form of fan assistance on the radiator would assist also. So running the pump full time does result in a more efficient system. Perhaps at the expensive of pump longevity granted, but it's a Toyota, not a Subaru so it should be up to it.

A small tip for you, the ST205 heat exchanger is good for at least 450hp ;), you may need a larger radiator and a more powerful pump though. If you are not planning to install a BFT, a front mount is a waste of time IMO.

Still persisiting with that puerile signature I see
