2T 8valve EFI vs 4AGE 16valve redtop smallport

Postby cozmoid » Mon Oct 03, 2005 6:13 pm

WELL
I am tryin to weigh up my options on the conversion for my AE70 Coupe
Heres the options
1. 2T 1600cc 8valve conversion. Well known racing pedigree and very torquie engine. Cheap conversion but dosen't bolt in to my chassis. Cheap engine with many parts around. My Cousin builds kick ass ones of these. Easy forced induction as they have low compression.

2. 4AGE 1600cc 16valve red top small port. Also big racin pedigree. Very rev happy engine. About $2500 to install(including engine, link computer fuel pump etc) Cheapish engine but hard to find good small port. Bolts straight into my car and gearbox but would have to be nice to the box till i get a T50. Also forced induction options but more costly(4agze bottom end etc)

So now u understand my dilema
2T = $1500ish

4AGE = $2500ish

Whats ur opinion, suggestion etc
Most of u probably havent heard about a 2T so dont comment on it unless u know! Im on a serious fact finding mission. Also if u can supply goodies i might need would be great!!

P.S. I dont want a blacktop as the drift king dont use one in his car neithe do all the jap drift AE86's they all use smallport redtop so im gonna follow their wisdom

$1500 for a 2T conversion? My mate got a 2TGEU, T50, loom, ECU and even a fuel tank with all lines for $250. I was offered a worked 2T for $300 with gearbox, if you do a lot of the work yourself, its' really not that hard at all! Just a little hassle here and there with getting the engine mounts setup, depending on wether your AE70 runs rack n pinion or recirculating ball steering. I'd say at an educated guess, $800 max for a 2T conversion.

4AGE conversion would be much more beneficial powerwise obviously, but people seem to want biiig dollars for even hi-km's, tired bluetops with RWD manifolds etc.. and then getting hold of a T-50 or W-55 with A-series bellhousing.. IMO its' just not worth it.

Lets' be honest, its' never going to be a 1/4 mile weapon with either motor, just a fun streetcar.. I'd say the most cost-effective option would definitely be the 2TG, they're damn strong motors, and parts are everywhere for them. They've got 115hp factory, with a set of headers, pod, maybe a head skim and big cams, as mine had, I'd say at least 130hp, which is ample in a light AE70.

My 2c anyway! :)

Either way you are up for $350 for cert as a minimum, plus getting the brakes working well (standard brakes will fade on the cert test real bad).
You need to decide if your AE70 is going to achieve the result you want for the $$$ you have. Either motor will give pretty similar results.

Bad-as Mofo push rod 2/3T.

if your looking to spend 25hundy on a twinky, spending similar money on a turbo 2/3T would produce some good numbers, and send a shiver down a $age(<deliberate) spines.
@T or $AG??? your call.

bah turbo a 4age if you really are looking for some more power

if you start out with a bluetop and turbo that, it will make 3t turbos look sick, a turbo 4agze will make them look utterly stupid

check out drifter4ag's stats from his turbo bluetop 176kw's at the wheels or something crazy like that?

2T's are a good engine so are 4AGE's have had a TA61 Celica good car but didn't have enough go at the time.

Found that most 3T GTE parts bolt right up to 2T and similar compression 8.4 on 3T GTE and 8.5 on 2T GEU so thawt what the hell do something different.

I found a wrecked TA63 3T Turbo which had no head but still had exhaust manifold and intake manifold + loom took the lot for $350 little bit of a $&#$% round but with intercooler we raised boost to 10 pound and sold it 8 months later.

Never had to change a thing but it was a really good 2T no chain rattle or smoke and the automatic tnesioner for the chain was good as well.

The up side for you is you have a smaller car so would go really hard even if you didn't turb it.

But If you wanted N/A then 4AGE only option no mater what make of 4AGE it's the logical choice.

Only down side is of course your diff. I blew up T series diffs like nothing your diff will have a heart attack im not sure but i think your diff is the same as a KP61 starlet from what i was told it was originally a 3AU right?

if you are so sure that $age is the only way to go, and you know a bit of tech on them, what is the most power produced from an A series turbo hybrid? any bore, any stroke any turbo?

this is not a personal dig at you, but i would like to know some numbers before i would become a true believer.

from someone who put 2tg (cams, sidies, comp, rebuild, flywheel) and then 2tgeu in a ke35.
then put a couple of 4ages into a carina, then turbo'd them, then pulled out and put 3teu, then pulled out and put couple 3sges... then WENT BACK TO 4AGE....
Then put the 4age gear into an AE70...

I say do the 4age conversion.. As you say, already got A series mounts, and box that will bolt on.

have a look under www.garagedori.com/tech regarding my 3t and 3s swaps, and have a look through our dyno graphs for REAL TESTED 4age power figures

yes, drifter4ag turbo setups make some mean beans.. even well before they got popular on here too.

Whoah this is makin it hard too choose

I have already done the suspension and brakes all TE71
Gettin disc brake rear from GT rolla this month so sorted there

Im still real stumped
I love drivin this car everyday so i dont think id ever turbo it. My cousin has a 2T KE30 with 3T internals and that has masses of torque an power for the little car so might go that way as he can help me out. Should still be quite reliable then

Sorry richie but we will see who was right once its done aye!

Since no one is answering this.

Fastest 3T in the world has run 7's on the quarter.

Fastest 4A I have found is low 10's, does anyone know of anything faster?

Think that pretty much answers the ultimate potential question.

yeah, BUT. parts. t series parts, espeically the tensioners etc can be bloody dear.
and rotors etc etc....
just make sure you can get the bits you need before you get to far into it.

btw i bet that 3t is a pure drag car, and the 4age a road based car....

those puerto ricans certaintly have some good runs with the 3t

i love the drag racing argument that T owners always bring up.

FWIW: there's faster than 10sec, there's some 4agte kp that's in the 8's or something.

no-one on this forum has a drag car like that. the question is what is best for this guys street car.
a 3t is torquey down low, but it only feels that way cos it's got nothing up top!
I'd still rather tow something with a 4age, just use a few more rpm..

as for street potential, a 4age revs to 7500 factory, a 3t revs to 5500. There's your quality of engine.

3t maybe cheap, but you should seriously go for a drive in both a T and an A good conversion cars.

What about 3T internals in a 2T-GEU motor?

I've been pondering about this lately, as I have just got a 2T-GEU. I wouldn't have thought it would be a torquey motor with the hugely oversquare bore and stroke - but maybe if you use the 3T crank, rods (and maybe pistons) you will still have an oversquare engine with torque and rev capability.

What holds the 3T back from a higher rpm redline? The pushrods? The 2T-B I have at the moment has a 6300rpm redline and happily goes above that. I got a Mitsi 4G37 which is 1755cc with bore of 80mm x stroke of 86mm (pretty much opposite to 3T), with SOHC 8 valve head and restricting carby, and it still makes peak power at 5600rpm and has redline of 6200rpm..
