How much boost throught a 1st gen 3sgte??

Postby Low_Aa63 » Sat Oct 15, 2005 3:58 am

How much boost could i squeze out of a gen one 3sgte?? i understand they are steel wheel turbo! are they T-vis equiped as the gen 1 3sge's are?

Also will the rear sub frame from an st185 or 205 bolt in as ive been told the drivetrain from those models was vastly improved!?!

any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ben

you can't go any higher than the fuel cut on the st165, which is at about 12psi, as the ecu doesn't use a map sensor for boost cut like the st185 does, instead it calculates it from the AFM signal and any attempt to clamp that with a zener diode (or similar FCD device) would result in the ecu not supplying enough fuel.

the st185 and st205 engines are very basic swaps, the main thing that needs to be changed when doing the swap is the wiring, which is a little bit complex but not too bad.

there would be no point at all in trying to change the rear sub frame, the st205 one definitely wont bolt in and the st185 one probably wouldn't either. You can change the rear diff though, as the JDM st185's and st205's had a TorSen LSD diff, this should be a direct swap.

Cheers dude magnificent!

The reason why i ask about subframe is that the car im working with is an origanal st163 and has had a gen 1 3sgte put in.. so i dont supose if you know the st165 gt4 rear subframe will bolt in and the possibly i can use st165 or 185 4wd front gear box?

Im just going to stick with the 1st gen 3sgte as im not flushed with funds at the moment but will it respond to mods??

And does it have the steel wheel turbo from factory?? what would be an easy upgrade turbo wise??

Thanks agian ts member

converting it to 4wd would be a major undertaking. I don't suppose the car is blue is it?

anyway, you're better off leaving whatever box is in there alone, and just replacing it with similar ones if you break it (should be cheap + easy to get from pick-a-part or similar). A beefier gearbox like an e153 from an mr2, or e52 from camry etc could be bolted up, but you'd probably need to play with mounts and driveshafts, and the box is likely to be reasonably expensive (and if you use an mr2 turbo one you have to change the shifter arm thing that goes into the gearbox.

people seem to get a bit frustrated trying to extract extra power from st165 motors, the limited amount of boost they can run can be a bit of a problem, and it's not uncommon to swap them for st185 engines. I haven't had enough experience with the gen 1 though.

The easiest and best bang for buck turbo swap is to get a ct26a from a 7MGTE supra. They are basically the same as stock except they have a much larger compressor wheel, and you just need to rotate the compressor housing (and possibly exhaust housing too I think), and swap your water + oil lines and wastegate actuator on. All single entry ct26 turbos were steel, only the twin entry ones found in st185s and mr2s were ceramic (not all of them though).

No the car is not blue..
Ive been told that a ct20b would be a good turbo swap is this correct??

yeah but they're twin entry so you'd have to swap your exhaust manifold for an st185 one, and you'd have to get a new downpipe made.
