4agte + TVIS

Postby Andy from the block » Mon Oct 24, 2005 9:43 pm

My engine (4agze turbo) recently got a head transplant with a 4age bluetop.
I decided to keep the TVIS system on even though the ECU can't control it and the
butterflies are open all the time, this is because Iam geting my link computer installed
soon and was thinking the link can control the TVIS..is this correct?

I was also reading around and came across this statement
"With regards to the TVIS, when turbo charging you must remove this from the inlet manifold
as boost pressures may cause the butterflies to warp, loosen and
end up in the cylinder. But you would remove this anyhow as leaving it on only lessens the
chance of gaining any decent hp. "
which I found at this website
http://www.mr2supercharger.com/4AGTE.html
What do you guys think? I mean, TVIS has been used on other turbo engines
before and youd think Toyota wouldnt design the butterflies not to be able to handle higher boost levels?

tvis is used on the 1ggte and similar thing on the 3sgte early models.

we have always used tvis on our turbo engines and it certainly doesnt limit the power .. unless our motors should have been making like 30% more without the tivis

are the TVIS butterflies in the 1ggte and 3sgte models the same
as in the 4age? (since those engines are turbo compared to the 4age being N/A)?
do you think there is any chance of the butterflies being affected
by high boost pressure and possibly geting ingested by the 4agte?
Do you know if the Link computers can control TVIS?
..yeah if been told the TVIS wont really impose any power restrictions
thats one of the reasons I want it..and the extra torque 8)

You may have to make a couple of changes as to how the tvis engages but it shouldnt be too hard. I have the acis manifold on my starlet and i use the rev switch on the link to trigger it. Mine just uses a one way valve and an aircon solenoid, vacuum sucks the butterflys closed, then the solenoid releases the pressure at a set point which opens them up.
Im not sure how the tvis actuator works but id presume it would be similar?

it is possible to control it with rpm switch output, as far as I'm aware even simplies aftermarket ecus have that.
You can even buy a kit from jaycar to control it (RPM switch kit).
TVIS is controlled by a solenoid located close to TVIS actuator.
It is activated by vacuum from special canister (with one way valve to store vacuum). Vacuum is routed to actuator from canister by solenoid.

I think best way to control TVIS/ACIS on turbo cars not by rpm but by boost, say TVIS opens @ 3psi not 4500rpm (or even it is possible to set up both activations).

And the link can deffintly do rpm or map based (or both) switching. On the V5 at least, older verisons can't do map i don't think.

nar, needs to be done by rpm not boost.

Wouldn't it be possible to use a simple, and cheap shiftlight to control it. All the relay would need is a 12V signal.

Thats what i plan to do.

I had a afterthought, im just going to try hooking it up to my supercharger indicator output on the ecu.

So when the engine comes on boost it opens it up.

Yes will work 100% fine.

nope, will work but not what you want,
as at 1500rpm when you floor it the SC ligh comes on,
but you dont want to activate the TVIS then.
