1JZ-GE Spark Plugs ??

Postby jondee86 » Tue Oct 25, 2005 9:40 pm

Getting keen :D Thought I'd shoot some new plugs into
the Chaser to see if I can squeeze a few more km's out of
each litre. As close as I can figure the stock plug is a dual
ground electrode Denso PK16TR11 with the IK16 Iridium
being an option.

Any one have an opinion on the best plug for the 1JZ-GE ??

I just use normal NGK Iridium plugs on the GTE and that seems to do the work fine.

OK... Denso and NGK Iridiums look to be pretty much the same.

Sooooooo...... how big a deal is getting the plugs out ?? Do you have
to remove that alloy intake casting that crosses over the top of the
engine ??

And should I be looking to replace plug wires while I'm in there ??

Yes you have to remove that plate in the middle wich is the spark plug cover. Then you just need to uplug the coil packs and unscrew teh spark plug. Easy Peasy...

Its a 1jz-GE umm, not sure, would be a little surprized if you had to remove the throttle body etc but havn't looked at one lately so anythings possible (the GE's are quite different to the GTE's, which is what Silent Knight is talking about.... :) )

have a look at plug leads for signs of arcing (burn marks) and measure the resistance of them with a multimeter, generally between 3000 - 15000ohms should be ok. unless you've got a miss or anything, they should be fine, but check em anyway

Yup... GTE is easy access... I have a feeling that one or more of
the plugs on the GE are under that pipe :( I'll take a closer look
tomorrow.

I was interested in seeing if there was any downside to changing
away from the dual ground electrode plugs to single ground. Way
back I can recall reading that if the engine is designed to use a
certain type of plug, then it can affect the timing or some such if
you change to a different type of plug ??

NGK's are good plugs, so I'll just price them both up and go with
the best price :) And I'll give the wires a clean and eyeball them to
make sure they are in good nick... never felt any missing so I figure
they will go again.
