GT4 Celica ST185 Rear Wheel Drive Conversion !?

hi all , i have a st185 celica gt4 ,would like convert it to rear wheel drive , dont know if its possible ,heard people said just remove front drive shafts ? any advises , thanks heaps' :)

usually need to lock centre diff and remove front drive shafts

if you remove the front driveshafts the car will drive like it has a slipping clutch, due to the viscous center LSD. You would need to get an early 165 box with the locking center diff. Still, it's a bloody stupid idea, if that's your cup of tea maybe you'd be happier with a gts-t?

if you really want a RWD, do the conversion properly, although IMO converting a normally transverse engined car to longitudinal, without providing serious structural reinforcement, is also bloody stupid, as the chassis is designed for loading due to the engine torque on one axis, and you're making the torque act about an axis 90 degrees offset from the intended one, which would surely lead to severe twisting of the chassis if you have any decent amount of power

also removing the front driveshafts will cause the front wheel bearings to fall apart and the wheel to fall off. You need to leave the outer cv's in

And I wouldn't think that the boys at Toyota had RWD conversions in mind when they were engineering your driveshafts or diff... I doubt they would last too long if any decent amount of power or some "spirited" driving was encountered. You are asking something to handle all the load as opposed to approx 50% of it... just doesn't add up.

if you want a rwd car then buy one

you can also put the st185 center diff into a RWD mode, but I'm not telling you how because there's about a 90% chance it will break if you drive it with any vigour

Theres a guy in auzzie with a 1uz converted to rear drive but hes an engineer and made most of the components himself I do believe as you need to move the steering rack and make the tunnel bigger to accomadate a rear drive gearbox. I have been considering a change my self but it would take a fair wack of time.



That guy in Auz reckons his handles heaps better now too

isn't that one also known for randomly popping the boot open due to chassis twisting? I mean no disrespect to Justen's work, he's done an excellent job and made a crazy beast, but I sometimes wonder about the structural integrity of an uncaged FWD based car with a high power RWD conversion

I think he want to do this coz he used to have a pretty phat AE86, and he might be missing that tail happy action in the sun. :P

try jacking up the st185 from the sill on one side.
the door wont close nicely now will it?

chassis flex from nam.

it would be cool to make a decent rwd st185, but the money you would need to do that right, would be enough to buy a decent rwd and then some

to be fair, my doors open and close fine with one corner jacked up. However the torque of a decent engine in RWD layout puts a sh*t load more stress into the chassis than jacking one side up

I was watching a show on sky about building mustangs into shelby 500's and they put a big cross brace under the car to restrict the twisting. Didn't look too heavy either.
