17 inch tyres choices

Postby gt-trainer » Sun Nov 27, 2005 8:30 pm

Have just bought some 17's for the caldina and thought some feedback on tyre choices could be interesting.

I am leaning towards Goodyear GSD3.

Anyone used these tyres before?

What car/rim and tyre size?

whats your opinions on them and how many km's did you get out of them?

What pressures did you run?

Fire away.

Im running GSD3s all round. 205/40R17 on the fronts and 235/40R17 on the rears. Unbelievable in the wet, on par with my Dunlop FM's in the dry. Had them on for 5000kms so far, no noticable wear yet. Running 40psi rears, 37psi front.

Front GSD3's 205/4017, 32psi
Rear FM901's 205/40/17, 32psi

Both makes seem to have very good grip in both wet and dry on an AE101.

Though I have been told (by the manager of Firestone in WGN who does the wheel alignments for the suspension shop who fitted my trd coilovers)to run the GSD3's on a higher psi becuase apparenlty they tend to round the edges quickly (can any one confirm this and what a good psi would be?).

In terms of wear, I have not had the GSD's on for long (1000ks) so they still have almost full tread. The FM901's are down to half tread after about 5000ks (switched them to the back at half tread and got the GSD's).

I've had 215/45 17 GSD3's on my Caldina for approx 30km's and they're now in need of replacement. They would've probably lasted longer but the front camber on my Teins causes them to wear through on the shoulder.

I have no complaints about the traction or the wear rate. I did have two punctures, but only at the end of their useful life so they don't seem have any tendencies to pick up crap from the road, unlike some Yokohama's I can think of, though that may just be a matter of luck.

I was only running 32psi in them and didn't notice any excessive rounding of the edges, but I can't say I really compared them to a new set.

FWIW I will be replacing them with another set. For the price, I can't find a better tyre.
