SW20 Clutch

Postby PeteSW20 » Thu Dec 08, 2005 7:51 pm

I want to replace the clutch on my sw20 mr2 GT.
I want something that will withstand some hard use at the drag strip and maybe the occasional track day.
What would you guys recomend

TRD do a "sports" clutch that would probably suit you, or most places will be able to suss you out a decent heavy duty set up.

I threw plenty of abuse at a 3sgte clutch I got from racebrakes (0800 brakes). Many, many 4wd launches, blew my gt4 gearbox before the clutch slipped. When I took it out it still looked to be pretty good. Cost was $750.

Why's that?

I've got a TRD Sports clutch in mine and I like it. Although I'm not often doing 5000RPM launches :P

You can slip it or drop it from high RPM and it'll spin up the wheels.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I had both the Autoclutch 4puck ceramic and a TRD Sports clutch (Kevlar)

I seriously regret buying that TRD heap of junk.

Are you guys talking about using it for drag racing? If you are, then I'd agree that its not the clutch of choice for that, being that its a full facing disc. Not designed for that sort of application.

haha yeah i do NOT recomend the TRD puck type for drag racing.... just about anything else is fine though.
driving style has a LOT to do with clutch life....

also you have to think about how if you can handle a puck type in traffic...

Whos scared of the big bad angry clutch

Two choices - Heavy pressure plate + a disk that allows some slippage (kevlar, organic, whatever), or a lighter pressure plate with the downside of no slippage. Or spend slightly more and get something with the best of both worlds. I've always run the former, worked a treat.

I have a TRD sports pressure plate and a full faced TRD sports clutch plate, it's JUNK, I was backing out of Wildcard's driveway and ride the clutch a bit, and it was smoking already.

The 4 puck ceramic autoclutch + factory pressure plate gave me many nights of night speed drag wars (4th place overall for that season 2001), and it's still sweet as.

TRD clutch = junk.

There'd certainly be nothing wrong with a TRD clutch in your application.
There are dozens of race & rally Corollas being raced in NZ successfully with TRD clutches.

In fact we've sold hundreds of TRD clutches throughout the years and to date haven't received a single complaint about any of them.

In our own rally Corolla we used a TRD cover and bronze paddle clutch for 4 seasons and over 50 events. It was still in the car when we sold it 2 years ago and could well still be in the car now.
It had good feel, good grip and was not harsh to drive at all.

We have national circuit champions who swear by the TRD brand and won't buy anything else.

I think the product, and it's reputation, is in good health.
