Ep71 snapped cambelt

Postby keiichi » Sun Dec 11, 2005 3:52 pm

bugger, I snapped the cambelt on my Ep71 this morning.

I just want to know wheather it would have damaged the valves in the process, or would it be sweet to put a new belt on and retime it. When i turn it over it doesn't seem to make any funny noises inside but i need to be sure.

2E injected motor.

cheers
Bud.

For how much room you have and the price of a cambelt, go get a belt and chuck it and see if it runs.

If it runs bad then track down a replacement engine (are the head/block designs all the same for the 2E and the 2E-E?) and put the new motor in. While you're putting a new one in you should probably do a cambelt, which you would conveniently have

EDIT- Or of course you could fix the old motor, or put a 4EFTE in :)

haha yeah, well i bought it a couple days ago for $400, for a cheap thrash, maybe to take to drag wars and club events cos it's really fun to drive.

The guy warned me he didn't know when the belt was last done, it was the first thing i had on the "to do" list, but sure enough it had to go on me now

Ive read that they are interferance motors, but Ive never snaped a belt. They are easy as to change, I can do one in around 30minutes in my turbo 2e

yeah new belt will be simple enough to put on.

what do you mean by interference motor? do you recon it might have caused some damage?

Interferance = Piston gives the valves a hug
Non interferance = No hugs

haha.

I've snapped a cam belt twice on EFI 2e engines, both times no damage was caused although they were both at very low revs. Slap a new belt on and hope for the best. Else I've got a spare EFI 2e here if required.

I was just having a look at it tonight, had a cambelt and everything ready to go on but found a few peices of rocker arm under the cam cover where they shouldn't be

I don't know whether any of the valves are bent or not.
