Help on replacing CV boots

Postby skidzon » Wed Dec 14, 2005 11:28 pm

replacing cv boot on a ST191 corona... an outer boot.

now i am stuck on how to get the bearings off so i can slide the new boot on, as i have already got the inner cv apart (away from gearbox/diff)... or is there an easier way?

thanks in advance.

remember the outer cv is still intact- is it easier to undo that?

Outer CV should come off with a few decent taps with a hammer, driveshaft in the vice. Usually the easier way (inner end will probably have a circlip holding the bearing bits onto the driveshaft). Outer CVs can be right c*nts to get back on sometimes, depends on what the circlip is like

amen to that. if the circlip has lost its tension, you have a prick of a job on your hands.

i have taken the clip off the inner cv, trying to get the spider gear off the shaft but it wont come off? some other thing holding it on or a friendly tap with hammer?

If the circlip around the shaft has been removed on the inner CV, it should just slide off the spline. Give it a friendly tap with a rag over the hammer head.

Seperate the lower ball joint, and tie - rod end, Undo the c/v nut and pull the strut aside, Use vise grips on the axle against the lower arm to prevent the inner slide joint popping out, Then Tap the c/v joint off the axle with a hammer. reassemble with new boot kit etc

I do them this way so you dont upset alignment by disturbing Camber Bolts and dont have messy plunge joint grease all over the show. Trying to get a boot clip back on a inner joint boot with f*&#n grease everywhere is a bitch!!
If you cant get the c/v off then yes it has to be fitted the hard way but 80% of the time they budge.

Just my 2 cents 8O
