Help Pls! New Cams for My AE111

Postby muff|n » Thu Dec 15, 2005 12:16 pm

I have a 20v Blacktop and...

I'm looking at getting new cams, and am wanting to know..
What brands do you reccomend?
Who do you reccomend to install/talk to about it?
Or even, being the newb I am, would I be able to do it with a few instructions?

And also, I hear talk of adjustable cam gears.. Would they be of great benifit? (I don't know how they work  )
Assuming money is no problemo...

And if I replace the larger of my cams, can I use the old big ones for my smaller ones? Or do I need to replace the smaller ones too?
Or should I just leave it alone..
Reason I ask is I want the performance increase at both ends of the rev scale.

I'm aware that it will idle like a bitch.

And I'll be getting a GReddy E-Manage before, so it will be all ready for camys.

Any help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks in advance :D

Seeing as you're in Christchurch, go talk to Kelford cams, they'll be able to tell you exactly what will work and what gains you're likely to see.
I dont get what you mean by replacing your bigger cams, you only have 2 cams in your engine - inlet and exhaust. If what I suspect you're thinking is VVT has 2 cams for each side, it doesnt work like the VTEC system.
If you want to keep VVT, you wont be able to use adjustable cam gears (unless someone has made an adjustable VVT pulley somehow)
Unfortunately going for a angrier spec'c cam is a bit of a trade off, if you want high RPM power you're going to have to sacrifice some low end torque...
I'm not sure how effective those Greddy E-manage ECU's are, but if you're looking to get serious with your car, a decent ECU is a must.

Money no object eh?

http://www.todaracing.com/products/toyo ... specs.html

Pick what you want / need (go have a search on cams for 4age, if its not covered on ts, it will be somewhere else online).

Outline what you want from your engine before choosing cams, youll cut your legs off if you choose the wrong ones X_X. oh and as covered above, you cant have both high end and low end ;). (well sort of, thats why toda make vvt useable cams)

Id get those just for the "safety" that you know your using new stuff up there, and its toda even! more bling! haha.

Finally if you want some adjustable cam gears, there ya go! I think Jimtune can also make some for 20v's btw. Toda is $300+ USD and then youll have shiping and junk.

then of course, and just because you should:

:) Have a nice day.

You seriously want to be looking at Toda at the moment. The prices through the site listed in the parts for sale section are fantastic. It may cost you slightly less for Kelford however they arent named Kelford mystery sticks for nothing.

Adjustable cam gears allow you to dial in the cams to get the most power from them. Its pretty pointless getting good duration aftermarket cams without adjustable cam gears. Another option for cam gears are the ones made on trademe or sold through Palmside.

they cost about 400 odd aussie and you have to set up the cam and it makes about 5kws more than std cam
also you have to set it up at 210 lifter rise at tdc and thats in its advanced state then you retard it ,my mate has 1 in his ke25 rolla ,it kicks arse for what it is
